This essay examines the interracial marriage between a white American woman named Mae Watkins and a Chinese man named Tiam Franking in the early 20th century. It analyzes their letters and her biography ghostwritten by Katherine Anne Porter to extrapolate the historical meaning of their transnational marriage life. It finds that this couple put forth their belief in the modern idea of marriage as a matter of individual choice to defend their love against the oppositions from American and Chinese society when both societies took for granted the idea of regulating marriage across racial and ethnic lines in order to build a homogeneous nation. Mae Franking’s side of the story exemplifies how the different gender systems of America and China interacted across borders. She navigated the different ideals and expectations of marriage and family from her native and adoptive countries. The confluence of the domestic visions of two countries defined her marriage.
