This study is intended to explore meanings and features of the space of elementary school classrooms. Subsequently, a few elements which are necessary to be considered will be demonstrated. First, Langeveld's and Bollnow's concepts of the space were studied and the effects of the space of topological psychology, environmental psychology etc. were evaluated. As a result, elementary school classrooms have meanings as educational space, social space and growth-developmental space. The features were examined in two streams, physical space and the unseen space which is defined by activities. There were fixed space and flexible space in physical space. The unseen space was defined as educational space, life space, play space and resting space by its activity. According to those meanings and features, there are four elements to be considered; age, gender, childhood secrets and the flexibility of the space of classroom. In conclusion, there are three important matters to be reflected- an elementary school classroom should be perceived as a crucial space where could influence students immensely and teachers should not take it indifferently. Second, elementary school teachers should put students in the center when they arrange the space. Third, it is effective to increase the flexibility of the space of classroom.

본 연구는 초등학교 교실 공간이 가지는 의미와 특성을 살펴보고 초등학교 교실 공간이 고 려해야 할 요소들이 무엇인지를 탐색하고자 하는 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 Langeveld와 Bollnow의 공간의 개념을 살펴보고 토폴로지심리학, 환경심리학 이 론 등에서 공간의 영향을 알아보았다. 연구 결과, 초등학교 교실 공간은 교육의 공간, 사회화 의 공간, 성장·발달의 공간이라는 의미를 가지며, 그 특성은 가시적인 물리적 특성과 비가시 적인 활동영역별 특성으로 구분되었다. 물리적 특성은 고정적 공간, 가변적 공간별 특성이 있 다. 활동 영역에 따라서는 학습 공간, 생활 공간, 놀이 공간, 휴식 공간별 특성이 있다. 이와 같은 의미와 특성으로 인해 발견한 초등학교 교실 공간이 고려해야 하는 요소는 총 4 가지이다. 첫째, 연령에서 오는 특성이다. 둘째, 성의 차이에서 오는 특성이다. 셋째, 아동기의 비밀스러움이다. 넷째, 교실 공간의 가변성이다. 이러한 연구를 통해 얻어진 결론은 첫째, 초등학교 교실 공간은 아동의 삶과 행동에 큰 영 향을 주는 공간이며, 초등학교 교사들은 이를 심각하게 고려해야 한다는 것이다. 둘째, 초등 학교 교사는 교실 공간의 주체인 학생을 고려하여 공간을 구성해야 한다는 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 교실 공간의 가변성을 높이는 것이 효율적이라는 것이다.
