This study is about addiction and spirituality. There are many theories and practices in counseling in order to solve patients' problems. Many modern psychologists insist that mental health and spiritual health are related to each other. In other words, spiritual health has been recognized as important aspect of recovery from mental problems. This study explores how spiritual health affects on mental health. Many people are addicted to certain substances in their life journey. Some is addicted to gambling. Some is addicted to drug. Some is addicted to alcohol. Those who experience addiction are suffering from physical and emotional attachment to substances in their life. These mental problems disturb people to connect with God. In other words, mental problem cause people to make a distance from God, Based on this, this study explores how spirituality affects on mental health among patients, especially alcohol abusers. The spirituality of AA helps alcohol abusers experience recovery from alcohol addiction and a meaningful relationship with God. Bill W is the co-founder of AA. From his personal conversation experience in his alcoholism, the spirituality of AA is beginning. Through the spirituality of AA alcohol abusers can shift their will of addiction to God through God’s help. Alcohol abusers believe that they can stop drinking through God’s grace toward them. In other words, alcohol abusers can experience recovery from the alcohol through recognizing their powerlessness over addiction and believing God can help them be sobriety. This is very important understanding in pastoral counseling, because it is a different approach from general position in psychology which emphasizes self-control as Mary Fukuyama and Todd Sevig insist. Rather than attaining individual control over the problem, alcohol abuses admit that they are powerlessness over addiction and look for God’s grace. This spirituality let us know that pastoral counselors help alcohol abusers shift self-deceit understanding of addicted people to realistic self-understanding. In addition, we should remember that God’s grace and guidance is necessary in order to heal the problem of alcohol abusers. In other words, mental health and spiritual heath are not separated and God’s grace is the important in terms of healing.

이 연구는 중독과 영성에 관한 것이다. 내담자들의 문제를 해결하기 위해 상담학에서는 많은 이론과 기술들을 연구하여왔다. 그리고 많은 현대의 상담심리학자들은 내담자의 심리적 문제는 영적인 문제와 서로 연관되어 있음을 주장한다. 다시 말하면 내담자의 영적인 건강이 내담자의 심리적 건강에 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 이러한 연관성에 바탕을 두고 이 글은 어떻게 영성이 내담자의 심리적 건강에 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 특히 중독자들의 중독 회복에서 중요하게 작용하는 영성이 어떻게 중독자들의 심리적 영적 건강에 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 한다. 중독치료에 효과적인 방법으로 알려진 AA(Alcoholic Anonymous)의 영성을 중심으로 어떻게 영성이 내담자의 문제를 해결하고 중독에서 치유되는 지를 살펴보았다. AA의 영성은 공동창시자인 빌 (Bill. W)의 종교적 회심의 경험에 바탕을 둔다. 이러한 종교적 회심에 근간을 두고 발전시킨 AA의 12가지 프로그램은 중독자들로 하여금 중독에서 회복하는데 중요한 역할을 감당한다. 알코올 중독자들은 자신이 중독을 조절할 수 없음을 깨닫는다. 이러한 이해는 자신의 중독을 회복시킬 수 있는 초월자, 즉 하나님의 은혜를 구하는 것에서부터 중독의 회복이 시작된다. 즉 중독자들의 자기에 대한 새로운 깨달음이 새로운 하나님의 이해를 가져오고 하나님의 은혜를 구하게 되는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 과정 속에서 많은 알코올 중독자들이 중독으로부터의 회복을 경험한다. AA의 이러한 영성은 목회상담학적으로 의미가 있다. 자아의 조절능력을 높여서 문제를 해결하려는 기존의 방법과는 달리 자아의 한계성과 무기력을 인정하고 초월자에 온전히 의지할 때 알코올 중독의 회복이 시작되는 것이다. 이것은 목회상담학적으로 상담 속에서 영성이라는 것을 재해석 하도록 도와준다. AA에서는 자신이 중독에 무기력하고 자신의 중독이 치유되기 위해서는 하나님의 인도하심을 믿는다. 그리고 이러한 하나님의 은혜에 대한 사모와 신뢰는 중독자들의 삶을 바꾸고 의미 있게 살도록 도와준다. 이러한 영성은 목회상담가들에게 내담자의 자기 기만적이고 때때로는 과장된 자기 이해를 현실적인 이해로 인도해 주어야 한다는 사실의 중요성을 알게 해준다. 뿐만 아니라 중독자인 내담자의 치료를 가능하게 하는 것은 신비한 하나님의 은혜와 도우심이 필요한 것임을 기억하게 해준 다는 것이다. 다시 말하면 심리적 문제와 영적인 문제는 별개의 것이 아니며 하나님의 도우심이 내담자의 문제 해결에 중요한 일임을 된다는 것을 살펴보았다.
