In the 21st century, the word 'spirituality' surpassed its traditional definition, and is used broadly in different topics across the world. This paper delves into researches done under Korean context on “spirituality“ and thus, focus on theology and Christian praxis on spirituality. Until now, in the Korean Church and Christian theologies, when the word 'spirituality' is applied in different cases, they are not completely unrelated, and at times it may appear to convey a different message. Sometimes the term can be applied to two contrasting things. But upon closer inspection, the term began from a single starting point and its meaning has gradually been expanded. Additionally, the term, spirituality, is sometimes used for “study of spirituality” or “spiritual theology”. “Study of spirituality” is suitable when it is used for situations where people experience supernatural phenomenon without any cultural background or religious understanding. “Spiritual theology” is an appropriate term when it is used to understand human experience in theological context. It should be noted that the methodology of spiritual theology is different from that of biblical theology, systematic theology, and practical theology. Thus, spirituality must be understood through the perspectives of “spirituality”, “study of spirituality” and “spiritual theology”. However, in the Korean Church, spirituality is overwhelmingly understood through “study of spirituality”. A characteristic of “study of spirituality” is that it requires interdisciplinary studies in order to conduct its research. Without borrowing theoretical tools from other disciplines, the meaning of spiritual experience cannot be understood fully. Because of this, most of the papers written regarding spirituality presented within the Korean Church find its starting point based on motivation to collaborate with other theologies and motivation to seek dynamic and practical theology that could help people mature. Papers on topics like church history and spirituality; Christian education and spirituality; psychology, counseling and spirituality; and spiritual exercises and other practical aspects of spirituality are published regularly. Thus, rather than trying to find the uniqueness of spirituality, its significance must be sought through research based on other research disciplines.

21세기에 들어와서 ‘영성’이라는 용어는 그 주제가 확장되었을 뿐만 아니라 전통적인 의미를 훨씬 뛰어 넘어 사용되고 있다. 이것은 한국적 상황뿐만 아니라 세계적인 추세이기도 하다. 이에 본 논문은 한국적 상황에서 ‘영성’과 관련하여 어떤 주제들로 연구가 진행되고 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 지면의 제한상 본 연구는 신학과 기독교적 실천분야와 관련된 영성에 관한 논문들을 주로 연구 대상으로 삼고 있다. 그 동안 한국교회와 기독교 신학 안에서 사용되고 있는 ‘영성’이라는 말의 의미는 매우 다양하다. 그 의미들이 상호간에 아주 연관성이 없는 것은 아니지만 표면적으로는 전혀 다른 의미를 전해주거나, 혹은 그 의미가 현저하게 확장되고 있음을 발견할 수 있다. ‘인간은 영성적인 존재이다’라고 규정할 때에 그 의미는 매우 다양할 수밖에 없다. 그래서 동일한 영성이라는 용어임에도 불구하고, 그 말이 사용되는 상황에 따라서 전혀 상관이 없는 의미로 보이기도 한다. 그러나 자세히 들여다보면 동일한 출발점에서 시작해, 조금씩 그 의미가 확장되고 있다는 발견한다. 그 용도들을 살펴보면 영성이라는 말이 어떤 때에는 ‘영성학’이라는 의미로, 또 어떤 때에는 ‘영성신학’이라는 의미로 사용되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 문화적 환경이나 종교적 배경과 상관없이 인간의 초월적인 경험적 속성에 대해 말하고자 영성을 사용한다면, 그 때에는 ‘영성학’이라는 말이 더 적합하다. 또 한편으로는 인간경험을 신학적으로 이해하려 하지만, 성서신학이나, 조직신학, 실천신학 등이 취하는 것과는 다른 방법론을 사용할 때에 그것은 ‘영성신학’이라는 말이 더 적합하다. 그래서 영성을 이해할 때에 ‘영성’, ‘영성학’, ‘영성신학’이라는 관점에서 이해해야 한다. 그런데 한국교회에서 진행되고 있는 영성에 대한 주제는 압도적으로 ‘영성학’에 관련된 것들이 많다. ‘영성학’ 연구 방법론의 특징은 간학문적이다. 영적경험이라는 것은 여타 다른 학문의 이론적 도구를 빌리지 않고는, 그 의미가 충분히 전달되지 않기 때문이다. 그래서 한국교회에서 발표되고 있는 영성에 관한 논문들 대부분은 여타 다른 신학과의 만남을 통해 보다 역동적이고, 실천적이고 인간성숙에 기여할 수 있는 신학을 모색하는 동기로 출발한다. 그래서 교회사와 영성, 기독교교육과 영성, 심리와 상담과의 영성. 영성훈련과 기타 실천적 영역과 영성이라는 주제의 논문들이 발표되고 있다. 그러므로 이제 영성이라는 말은 그 자체의 독특성보다는, 간학문적인 연구들을 통해서 드러나고 있는 그 의미를 찾아야 한다.
