This study is to explore narratives weaved in 1 Thessalonians and then to reveal that the narratives play an essential role in community formation, taking account of studies on Paul which have suggested that Paul’s letters have a narrative dimension. Firstly, narratives both the kergmatic narrative and local narratives Paul used in 1 Thessalonians are investigated. It is demonstrated that Paul in 1 Thessalonians exploited the kergmatic narrative Paul had preached in his founding ministry and also he weaved the local narratives into 1 Thessalonians, which embrace stories of Paul with his fellow missionaries and of the Thessalonian believers. Then, the function of the kergmatic narrative and the local narratives in 1 Thessalonians are examined. It is showed that Paul’s aim to intertwine the narratives is not primarily to convey information unfamiliar to the Thessalonian believers rather to aid them in deriving a communal identity and distinguish them from other groups for the community formation. Though contemporary homiletics have understood the prime function of narratives as facilitating the listener to experience in preaching event, it is necessary for contemporary preachers to understand that narratives play a crucial role in community formation as seen in Paul’s example.
