Photography stems from an intervening act of selection based on a machine. Therefore, photographic expressions of creativity and artistry are sufficient to understand the photographic mechanism, and this takes place in conjunction with artistic expression. Therefore, photographs represent a physical entity on photographic paper generated on the basis of photography. Moreover, photos are a comprehensive concept which includes a range of values that occur during the process based on the specific use of it. Photography as art has a range of values. Although photography is a science, photographs include all elements, i.e., technical elements as well as artistic and humanistic elements. However some photographers concentrate on one aspect of photographic technology. Furthermore, there is a disproportionate flow of neglect with regard to the other types of value of photography. Status is generally divided into several classes that focus excessively on technical aspects and art. To become a true photographer with balance, the scope of photography should initially be extended to enable the artistic expression of the technical elements. In addition, the technical mechanisms of photos should be segmented. This study segments the photographic mechanism into 26 phases by reviewing the machine and artistry of photography. In addition, it presents a conceptual framework of a diagram linked to artistic expression. The paper also explores artistic expression and the structure of artistic expression as part of the photographic mechanism utilized by the photographer in conjunction with the photographic art flow as seen in the history of photography.

사진은 기계성에 기초한 선택이라는 행위의 개입에서 비롯된다. 따라서 사진적 표현의 창조성이나 예술성은 사진 메커니즘을 충분한 이해하고, 그것을 예술적 표현으로 연계시킬 때 이루어진다. 그러므로 사진은 사진술을 바탕으로 생성되는 인화지 위의 이미지라는 물리적 실체뿐 아니라, 그것을 구상하고 활용하는 과정에서 발생하는 다양한 가치 등을 포괄하는 개념이다. 예술로서의 사진은 그 다양한 가치 중의 하나이다. 사진술(photography)은 과학이지만, 사진(photograph)은 기술적 요소뿐 아니라, 예술적 요소와 인문적 요소 등을 모두 포함하는 것이다. 그런데 사진의 한 측면인 기술에만 집중하고, 그 나머지 가치를 등한시하는 불균형의 흐름이 존재하고 있다. 대체로 기술적인 측면에 과도하게 치중하는 부류와 예술에만 치중하는 부류 등으로 양극화되는 형국이다. 균형감을 가진 진정한 의미의 사진이 되려면, 먼저 사진의 기술적 요소에 내재한 예술적 표현 요소를 활성화하면서 사진의 범주를 확장하여야 한다. 그리고 사진의 기술적 메커니즘을 분절해야 한다. 본고는 사진의 기계성과 예술성에 대한 새로운 관점의 검토를 통해 사진 메커니즘을 26단계로 분절한다. 아울러 그것을 예술적 표현과 연계한 개념적 틀을 다이어그램으로 제시한다. 그리고 본고는 사진의 역사 속에서 보이는 사진가와 사진의 예술사조를 연계시켜 실질적으로 활용 가능한 사진 메커니즘의 예술적 표현 구조를 탐색한다.
