Reality programs are among the most popular media genres, inducing pleasure and sincerity with various narrative mechanisms based on reality or on fictitious elements which are fabricated as real. Disaster films also induce a sense of intensity as well as a sense of the real by adopting narratives that mirror disastrous events in real life. This study analyzes the similarities between the narrative structures, characters, genre conventions and reality-inducing elements of the two genres. Reality programs can be categorized as a type of pseudo-realism fiction and can be divided into several sub-genres through various standards. Disaster films utilize the basic narrative convention of a man or group against natural disasters, or natural disasters caused by other men or entities. Disaster films of the new millennium ensure an apocalyptic reality by adopting narratives of real-life massive disasters. Both genres have identical character structures of hero/winner vs antagonists (selfish and/or incompetent peers, evil force/rigid judges) within the basic narrative structure of stability followed by instability followed by new stability. Both genres also share similar genre conventions, such as a threat target, a plot-oriented narrative composition, hierarchies among the characters, gambling, isolated locations, ruptures among peers, romance and professionalism, or some form of unexpectedness of a hero/winner. They also share the same critical mindset about how to represent the spectacle of casualties/dropouts. Regarding the mechanism which induces reality, both utilize identical elements, such as reflections on social aspects, documentary elements, narratives of sincerity and distrust, the appearance of a non-celebrity or a public figure, and survival elements.

리얼리티 프로그램은 ‘사실’을 기반으로 하거나 ‘사실적인 느낌을 주는’ 여러 가지 기제들을 활용하여 진정성과 극의 재미를 유발하는 방식으로 대중의 인기를 끌고 있다. 재난영화 또한 현실에서 일어날법한 서사를 차용하여 긴장감과 현실감을 유발한다. 본 연구는 두 장르가 서사구조와 인물 설정, 장르의 관습적 요소와 리얼리티를 유발하는 요소들에 있어서 상당히 유사한 면을 가지고 있음을 분석한다. 리얼리티 프로그램은 현실감을 주기 위한 기제들을 활용, 현실을 재구성하는 ‘유사-리얼리티’ 장르이며, 분류기준에 따라 여러 하위 장르로 나뉜다. 재난영화는 인위적, 자연적 재앙에 맞선다는 기본 서사를 가지고 있으며, 21세기 이후 재난영화들은 현실에서 빈번해진 대형재난들의 서사를 차용, 묵시록적 분위기를 조성하며 리얼리티를 확보한다. 두 장르 모두 ‘안정-불안정-새로운 안정’의 기본 서사 구조를 바탕으로 주인공(영웅 혹은 우승자)과 대립자(이기적인 인물, 무능한 동료, 사악한 권력 혹은 엄격함 심사위원)의 인물구조를 가진다. 장르의 관습적 요소는 위협대상, 플롯위주의 서사구성, 계급구조형성, 도박요소, 고립된 배경, 내부 분열, 로맨스 플롯, 주인공의 전문성 혹은 의외성 등 여덟 가지 항목의 공통점을 보인다. 또한 주인공과 우승자에 가려진 재난희생자와 탈락자의 스펙터클을 어떻게 재현하는가에 대한 문제의식도 동일하게 공유한다. 리얼리티 생성방식에 있어서 두 장르는 당대사회상 반영과 다큐멘터리 요소의 활용, 진정성과 불신의 서사, 일반인 출연, 경쟁 기제의 활용 등 동일한 요소들을 활용한다.
