Without freedom of expression and diversity, development of art cannot be expected. Art in South Korea, is focused on escapism and conceptual art instead of awareness of reality and social movement, as the country failed to achieve modernization on its own. This state of paralysis in Korean art can be partly attributed to rigid political system as a result of division into South and North, but, more fundamentally, is because there has been no reflection on 'modernity' and reform yet. This study aims to propose a way to art creation by examining how Lu Xun saw the social reality and how he wrote his novels from his perspective. First, in the introduction, the author will explain that I became interested in Lu Xun's literature because I recognized the problem of 'lack of modernity and reality awareness in Korean art'. Later, the study introduces how Lu Xun came to devote himself to literature and how he recognized reality, as well as his realist literary view. Also, several novels written by Lu Xun and their meaning will be discussed. Lastly, the study will suggest the meaning of 'hope' found in the life and works of Lu Xun.

표현의 자유와 다양성이 확보되지 않는다면 예술의 발전을 기대할 수 없다. 근대화를 주체적으로 이루어내지 못한 한국의 예술은 현실에 대한 인식과 사회참여적인 활동을 전개하지 못하고, 현실도피적인 관념주의 예술로 치우쳐 전개되고 있다. 한국의 예술이 이렇게 반신불수의 상태를 지속하고 있는 것은, 남북 분단으로 인한 정치체제의 경색에도 원인이 있지만, 그보다 더 근본적인 원인은 ‘근대’에 대한 반성과 개혁이 아직도 이루어지지 않고 있기 때문이다. 본 논문은 루쉰(魯迅)이 사회현실에 대해서 어떤 태도를 견지했는지, 그렇게 해서 씌어진 글이 어떤 형태로 나타났는지 살펴봄으로써, 예술창작에 대한 하나의 길을 보여주는데 목적이 있다. 먼저 서론에서는 필자가 루쉰의 문학에 관심을 가지게 된 동기가, ‘한국예술에서 근대성과 현실인식의 부재’에 대한 문제의식에 있다는 점을 밝힌다. 본론에서는 루쉰이 문학에 투신하게 된 배경과 현실을 인식하는 방법을 소개하고, 그런 인식을 바탕으로 루쉰이 형성한 현실주의 문학관이 무엇인지 살펴볼 것이다. 그 다음으로는 루쉰 문학의 몇 가지 특징을 보여주는 작품들을 감상해 보고, 그 의미를 짚어볼 것이다. 끝으로, 루쉰의 삶과 문학이 오늘의 우리 사회에 던져주는 ‘희망’의 의미를 생각해보는 것으로 마무리하고자 한다.
