The beauty of white is, first of all, being the purest color which does not dilute the coloring and delighting itself with its own illumination. White skin is one of the standards of beauty and birth of its own, but it is also the color that heads towards death making it the double-sided color of all. One interpretation is that white is positioned on the same plane as life and death, and it is in line with the philosophical meaning of temporal life and practical life where life accompanies death and death leads to life. Therefore, it is more clear and lighter in Eastern life styles than it is in Western life styles, and this may the reason why the color white is reflected in art forms as much as it does. In many religions, white means the foundation and fundamental of things, and it is mainly depicted as the source of light and the birth of the beginning. White light is a holy color, spiritual color and the color of man’s kind nature which man kept it at his side at all times as a medium to remind himself to never lose the kind nature of himself. In particular, Koreans was a race that worshiped white light through various items in their daily lives such as the sky and sun worshiping, food, folk lore, mourning dresses and clothes from ancient times. Korean art was no exception. White porcelain, beauty of space in Korean paintings and crane worshiping reflected in porcelains have left countless aesthetic messages, and the light has become the guiding light in studying the philosophy pursued by Koreans. Korean dancing is also a practical body language reflecting the inner spiritual. Of course Korean dancing has been influenced by many forms of other dancing, but the most traditional and historical forms of Korean dancing has preserved itself as a dance worshiping the color white. White adds outstanding beauty in its form through the meaning of “Korean dancing = White,” and it proved that Korean art has its own aesthetics embedded within itself unlike other cultures. Korean dancing moves forward to the enlightenment, and it leaves the color of one’s heart as pure white. Every single dance move releases oneself as nature has formed, and by eliminating the resentment of oneself, one can understand oneself and others and leave all to communicate towards the providence of the universe.

흰 빛의 미는 우선 가장 순수한 색으로 채색의 정도가 흐려지지 않고 스스로 환희 빛나는 색이다. 흰 살빛은 미의 기준이 되며 탄생인 반면 죽음으로 가는 이중지향의 색이라 말할 수 있다. 다시 해석하면 삶과 죽음은 동일선상에 있으며 생(生)한 뒤 소(消)는 멸(滅)아니라 다시 생(生)하기 위한 기운으로 현세적 삶과 실천적 삶을 권고하는 철학적 의미와도 통한다. 따라서 서양보다는 동양적 삶에서 더욱 청량감과 밝음을 지향하게 두어 흰 빛이 유독 예술에도 많이 반영되었을지 모른다. 흰색은 많은 종교에서 본바탕, 본심을 의미하기에 태초의 경지와 생하는 빛의 원천을 의미했다. 흰 빛은 신성한 색이였으며 정신적인 색이며 인간의 선한 본성을 의미하는 색으로 본연의 심성을 잃지 않기 위해 고매한 인격의 수단으로 늘 가까이 두려는 색이었다. 특히 한국인은 고대 사회로부터 하늘과 태양 숭배, 음식, 민간신앙, 상복, 의복 등 모든 생활양식 곳곳에 흰 빛을 숭상하는 민족이었음을 알 수 있다. 이는 한국예술도 예외는 아니었다. 백자와 한국화에서 여백의 공간, 학을 숭상하여 그린 도자기 등 흰 빛은 많은 미학적 메시지를 남기고 민족의 철학까지 가늠하게 해주는 영롱한 빛이 되고 있다. 한국춤 또한 내면과 정신을 추구하는 실천적 몸짓 언어이다. 한국춤은 오방의 영향도 물론 받았지만 오래된 역사와 전통에 가까운 춤일수록 흰색을 숭상하는 춤으로 보존되어 남아 있다. 흰색은 ‘한국의 춤=흰색’ 이라는 숭고함이 우미(優美)를 더하며 한국 예술이 다른 문화와는 다른 독자적 미의식으로 자리매김하고 있다는 것을 증명해 주었다. 한국춤은 구도자와 같이 명상과 깨달음의 경지를 향해 움직이고 마음의 채색을 흰 빛으로 비워둔다. 춤사위 하나하나에 자연그대로 나를 놓아 버리고 원(怨)과 한(恨)을 비워냄으로써 나와 타자를 이해하고 우주의 섭리를 향해 서로 소통하게 내버려 두는 것이다.
