This thesis is on the artist Bharti Kher, who stands against Hindu, the absolute religion in India, and is famous for her feminist features. Bharti Kher is the only contemporary India artist that concerns about the India female being oppressed from the society and the religious womanhood of India. She tries to cover the not-yet-solved matter in Indian culture in her work. Kher works has some properties in common that agger to be anti-Hindusim and anti-caste. Objects in her works covers some symbols such as sperm-like bindi, the third eye and sari taken on the oppression at Indian women. The exploitation of Hindu goddess whole honorable roles arr as well characterized as a sacrifice for their men and home as well. Physical deformities of body of women that is described as the therianthropic figures. Signifies the defective and unprotected Indian women. We can see also this characteristics from the bizarre posture of the nude statue of Hindu goddess baring the specific parts of her body as well. Thus, this study is considered to be worthy. The status of any domestic studies on this artist is not developed enough yet, so this thesis is mostly based on the interviews of her work and stories with her.

본 논문은 인도라는 국가의 절대적 종교인 힌두교에 대한 비판적 성향 중에서도 페미니즘적인 특징을 가진 바티 커(Bharti Kher, 1969- )의 작품을 중심으로 연구해 보고자 하였다. 바티 커는 당대의 애니쉬 카푸어(Anish Kapoor, 1954- ), 수보드 굽타(Subodh Gupta, 1964- ) 같은 아시아권 인도 작가 중에서도 유일하게 사회·종교적으로 억압 받고 외면당하는 인도 여성들에게 시선을 돌리고 있다. 그녀의 작품 전반에 공통적으로 나타나는 특징은 반 힌두교 반 카스트 제도적이라는 점이다. 이는 그녀의 작품에 사용되는 제 3의 눈인 정자모양의 ‘빈디’와 인도여성들의 억압을 상징하는 ‘사리’ 등 다양한 상징적인 의미를 지니고 있는 오브제와 더불어 남성과 가정을 위하여 희생하는 것을 자랑스럽게 여기도록 설정되어진 인도의 ‘여신상 이미지의 차용’ 등에서 나타나고 있다. 또한, 불완전하고 보호받지 못하고 있는 인도 여성들의 모습을 비유한 ‘반인반수의 형상’과 같은 신체적 결함을 지닌 여성의 모습 그리고 신체의 중요한 부위를 일부러 드러내고 기괴한 자세를 취하고 있는 나체의 여신상 등에서 이러한 특징이 직·간접적으로 나타난다고 볼 수 있다. 그녀는 단순히 인도적인 감각이나 물질을 가지고 작품을 진행시키는 것이 아니라, 아직까지도 해결되지 않은 인도가 가지고 있는 문화적 문제점들에 관하여 이야기하고자 한다. 따라서 그녀의 작업을 연구하는 것에 의미가 있다고 사료되어 진다. 현재 바티 커에 대한 국내의 학술적 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않은 실정이다. 따라서 해외 학술자료와 작가 인터뷰 등을 중심으로 이 논문을 작성하였다.
