One of the character of the books published in Joseon period is small in number containing engraving. Especially portrait engraving is much less. Thus this study is to examine the character of the books containing portrait engraving, and the result is as follows. First, the books only containing portrait engraving are YeokDae GunSinDoSang and GunSinDoSang. The former containing 108 kings and subjects was compiled by Yi-Heng and the painters of painting bureau on the order of the king Jungjong, and published with wooden plate in 1526. This book was introduced to Japan and published several times. The latter containing 194 kings and subjects is anonymous, and published with wooden plate in 17th century. It is introduced for the first time in this study. Second, the books containing portrait engraving with illustrations was anthology or biography. All the person illustrated those books was model of reverence in those days and broadly the illustrations were added to the second edition of anthology from the 16th century. The first anthology containing portrait engraving was YaEunSunSengHengRok published in 1573. Third, the purpose of containing portrait engraving in the books was to emulate those great person by distinguishing good and evil. Meanwhile, It could be reflection of consciousness of their region or family.

조선시대 간본의 특징 가운데 하나로 판화의 수록이 적다는 것을 들 수 있다. 특히 인물 판화가 수록된 경우는 더욱 그렇다. 따라서 이 연구는 인물 판화가 수록된 서적에 대한 조사를 통하여 그 특징과 양상을 살펴보기 위한 것이며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인물 도상만이 수록되는 종합 도상집은 『역대군신도상(1526)』과 『군신도상[17c]』이 있다. 전자는 중국 인물 108인(임금 40인, 신하 68인)이 수록된 목판본(음각)으로 중종의 명으로 이행 등이 약전․찬문을 짓고 도화서 화공이 그림을 그려 편찬되었다. 현재 국내외에 7종이 전하며, 일본에도 전래되어 17세기에 목활자와 목판본 간행으로 이어졌다. 후자는 목록과 도상만으로 구성된 목판본(음․양각)으로 君臣의 구분 없이 연대순으로 盤古부터 許謙까지 194인을 수록한 책이며, 이번 연구를 통하여 처음 소개되는 유일본이다. 둘째, 삽도로 수록된 우리나라 인물 도상은 문집이나 실기에 주로 수록되어 있다. 이들 모두는 당대 공경과 귀감의 대상이 되는 인물들로, 조선 전기에는 수록되지 않다가 1573년 길재가 『야은선생행록』에 수록되는 것을 시작으로 문집의 중간본에서 추가되는 현상을 보였다. 셋째, 인물 도상이 수록되는 것은 圖像을 보면서 善과 不善을 알고 행적을 본받고 경계하기 위한 鑑戒가 주된 목적이었으며, 한편으로 문집에 수록되는 것은 지역과 가문의식의 반영이라고 할 수 있다.
