Yongboksa was a temple located in Sakryoung, Gyeonggi-do Province. More than 26 kinds of Buddhist books were published in the temple from 1628 to 1636. It is difficult to find such a prolific example. It was an effort to revive Buddhism after Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. But around 1643, publishing work at the Yongboksa temple mostly came to an end, and Yongboksa has become a ruined temple since then. This paper is a study of the hands-on workers of the publication process based on the “offering list.” Based on this research, I was able to establish the characteristics of the Buddhist books. The leader of the publication project at Yongboksa temple was the Buddhist monk Hyesun. He declared Sangjeong and Jimuk to be in charge of the most important work, and nominated several engravers and “skilled workers of woodblock” to continuously participate in the job. In case of sharing publications, he announced a person in charge so that the publication work could be efficiently finished in a short period of time. Some Buddhist books show characteristics of revisions and improvements. Because of the proofreading, we cannot overlook the accuracy of the content.

경기도 삭령에 있었던 용복사는 국가의 경제상태가 매우 열악하였던 1628년부터 1636년까지 8년간에 걸쳐 26종 이상의 불서를 간행하였다. 이렇게 단기간에 집중적으로 불서를 간행한 사례는 찾기가 쉽지 않다. 임진왜란 이후 불교계의 세력이 결집되면서 불교계의 중흥을 위한 노력의 일환으로 생각된다. 1643년경에는 간행사업이 거의 종료되었고, 이후 18세기 중기에는 폐사되어 현재는 그 흔적마저도 찾기가 쉽지 않다. 이 글에서는 간행사실과 함께 시주질 등에 수록된 간행실무자들을 살펴 용복사에서 간행한 불서들의 특징을 조사하였다. 간행사업의 주도자는 용복사의 승려인 혜순이었다. 그는 대시주에 상정, 별좌에 지묵을 전담토록 하였고, 각수와 연판담당자 등 다른 실무자들도 지속적으로 참여시켰다. 또 분담하여 각판할 경우에는 양쪽의 업무를 조정하는 담당자까지 둠으로써 단기간에 이 일을 성취할 수 있었던 것이다. 용복사에서 간행된 일부 불서의 특징은 새로운 내용이 보완되었고, 교정을 통해 내용이 정확해졌다는 점도 간과할 수 없을 것이다.
