The state of death has been expressed in various ways with its own language in China since ancient times. The difference in social positions and occupations makes it happened and the causes of death also influences upon the different ways to express the death. There are so many types of Chinese characters to mean directly the death. This is one of the main reasons why people in china express the death in various ways. However Chinese characters has fluent words to express the states of being dead in a indirect way. This feature has been caused by their particular styles of speech. This linguistic phenomenon have been appeared in modern times of China more than before. Including the foreign expressions, the scope of this study focuses on considering three syllables, idiomatic words, proverbs and Xiehouyu(歇後語) as searching objects. The study classifies as follows. First, the expressions of death in Chinese vocabulary. Second, the expressions of the state of not being dead. Third, the expressions to mean death indirectly in Chinese vocabulary. Forth, the foreign expressions related to the meaning of death. The study ultimately aims to understand widely and closely the meaning of death through Chinese linguistic life and habits. In order to reach this purpose, it is necessary to consider the various expressions to mean death that could be showed differently owing to social positions and occupations of the dead, time and space of being dead, and causes of death.

중국에서 죽음을 표현하는 한자는 자고이래 다양하게 나타났었다. 계층, 직업 등에 따른별칭이 생겼고, 그 죽음의 원인에 따라서도 또 달리 불리어졌다. 이러한 표현들은 죽음을 나타내는 한자의 종류에 기인한 것도 있으나, 그렇지 않은 한자를 통해서도 죽음을 표현했던 것은사람들의 언어사용 즉 화법에 기인한 것도 있는데, 이것은 특히 현대의 중국어 표현에서 더욱그러하다. 死類․非死類 한자의 어휘연구의 범위는 중국어 외래어 표현을 제외하면, 모두 3음절 단어 이상으로 성어, 속담, 헐후어(歇後語)를 그 대상으로 하였는데, 그 분류는 첫째, 死類 한자어휘의 죽음표현. 둘째, 非死類 한자 어휘의 죽음표현. 셋째, 죽음표현과 무관한 死類 한자 어휘. 넷째, 死類 한자의 중국어 외래어 표현 등으로 나누어 그 어휘를 살펴본다. 중국인이 죽음을 표현하는 한자 어휘는 죽음의 원인, 장소, 계층, 직업 등등으로 다양하게많은 것이 있으니 우리는 이를 통해 중국인의 죽음 표현 언어 이해의 도움과 한자의 다의어등을 폭넓게 이해하는데 그 의의를 찾고자 한다.
