The purpose of this study is to examine textbooks for learning Korean written by westerners during the early 20th century. Four different textbooks which include sample sentences and conversational dialogues were analyzed in terms of their format (i.e. textbook structure and chapter organization) and content (i.e. background information and purpose of publication, lesson content, types and meaning of example sentences) as time progressed during the early 20th century. The characteristics of Korean learning textbooks are as follows: First, the simple and isolated organization of the book and chapters became more complex and systematic with integrated topics and functions. Additionally, example sentences also began to appear in a discourse level and in pattern drills along with Audiolingual Method. These findings prove that Korean learning textbooks which focused on conversation practice existed during the early 20th century. These textbooks have significance for Korean textbooks of the following generation as they have transitional features of the textbooks of the late 19th century and the textbooks of the 1960s.

이 연구는 20세기 초 서양인에 의해 개발된 한국어 학습서를 조사하고, 그 특징을 살펴보는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 20세기 초 출판된 한국어 학습서 중에서 예문이나 회화문이 포함된 4종의 책을 분석 대상으로 선정하였고, 이들 한국어 학습서의 전체적인 구성 및 단원 구성 같은 형식적인 측면과 함께 편찬 배경 및 목적, 단원의 중심 내용, 예문의 유형, 예문 간의 의미 연결, 예문의 내용 등과 같은 내용적 측면을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 바탕으로 20세기 초 한국어 학습서의 특징을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 학습서의 전체 구성 및 단원 구성이 예문 또는 문법 항목을 제시하는 고립적이고 단순한 구성에서 여러 주제와 기능이 통합되는 양상으로 변화하였고, 학습서의 예문이 문장 단위에서 담화 단위로 나아가고 있었다. 또한 20세기 초의 한국어 학습서는 점진적으로 청각구두 교수법을 수용하는 양상을 보였다. 이러한 특징을 통해 20세기 초에도 회화 중심의 학습서가 존재했음을 알 수 있으며, 이들 학습서는 19세기 말의 학습서와 1960년대 학습서의 과도기적 성격을 갖지만 20세기 초 이후 발간된 학습서의 토대가 되었다는 의의를 지닌다.
