This study examines the aesthetic characteristics and values of essays written by Baek Seok. His essays are highly valuable in that they clearly delineate his character and voice from that in his poems. They also provide an honest depiction of his consciousness and view of the world. The characteristics of his prose, particularly essays, such as prose style, emphasis on narration, and detailed scenery description are significant and valuable for understanding the nature of his writings. That is, the examination of his essays contributes to an understanding of the aesthetics of his literary works. Baek Seok combines the above-mentioned characteristics organically in the frame of his works to produce both aesthetic features and literary values. First, the essential aesthetic base of his literary works is the visual descriptions of scenes, which initiates from inner identity through landscapes. The most notable feature of his works is the integration of an entity that looks at an object and another entity that describes the object through an encounter, resulting in the describing of landscapes and scenes. Second, the spirit and life of the Korean people are reflected in the description of memories and visualization of cultural customs. Such literary works of Baek Seok indicate his commitment to maintaining the identity of the Korean people, which was under the threat of dying out due to foreign suppression during the Japanese colonial era. Third, local language and food are vividly described in his works, indicating that Baek Seok was highly concerned about circumstances of the times represented by a national identity crisis.

지금까지 백석에 대한 연구는 시에 치중되었고, 그의 산문에 대해서는 무관심 할 정도로 소홀하였다. 말 그대로 그의 소설과 수필들은 그대로 방치되어 왔다 해도 과언이 아니다. 그러나 이제 백석의 산문, 즉 소설과 수필에 대해서도 본격 적으로 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 이에 본고는 그의 수필에 나타난 미적 특 성과 그 가치를 살펴보았다. 백석의 수필 작품은 시에서 보지 못한 그의 또 다른 면모와 육성을 들을 수 있다는 점에서 그 가치와 무게를 지닌다. 오히려 숨김없 이 유로된 백석의 작가의식이나 세계관을 엿볼 수 있다. 백석의 산문, 특히 수필 에 내장된 백석 작품의 산문성과 서사 지향성, 풍경 묘사의 특징 등은 백석 문학 의 코드를 파악하는 데 그 의미와 가치가 있다. 즉 백석의 수필에 대한 탐색이 백석 문학의 미학적 완성에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것이다. 작가가 작품의 전면 에 드러나지 않고 숨어버리는 시와는 달리, 수필은 작품에 그대로 노출된다는 점에서 작가의 생생한 육성을 들을 수 있는 장르다. 따라서 백석의 수필을 통해 우리는 그의 시에서 느끼지 못했던 또 다른 페르소나(Persona)를 만난다. 백석 수필은 대상에 대한 깊은 관조와 통찰에서 비롯되는 미학성을 기반으로 한 산물이다. 바로 백석은 이들 자질을 작품의 틀 속에 유기적으로 결속시킴으 로써 미학성과 문학적 가치성을 모두 획득하고 있다. 첫째, 풍경의 서사화와 서 사의 장면화를 다룬 작품으로 ｢해빈수첩｣, ｢마포｣, ｢무지개 뻗치듯 만세교｣를 들 수 있다. 백석 문학의 기본적인 미학적 기제는 시각적 장면 제시의 방법이며, 풍경을 통한 내면적 동일성의 구축에서 출발한다는 것을 보여준다. 특히 백석 문학에서 가장 뛰어난 것은 시선 주체와 서술의 주체가 서로 교차하고 융합되면 서 풍경의 서사화와 서사의 장면화를 이룩하는 미학적인 특이성이다. 둘째, 기 억의 서사화와 문화 습속의 이미지화를 다룬 작품으로 ｢편지｣와 ｢입춘｣이 있다. 우리 고유의 보름날과 입춘절기에 대한 풍속을 자세히 묘사하고 있는데, 문화습 속의 이미지화를 통하여 우리 민족의 정신과 삶을 다룬 수필이다. 이들 작품을 통해 일제 강점기 외세의 억압으로 점점 사라져 가는 우리 민족의 정서와 정체 성을 고수하려는 백석의 의지를 엿볼 수 있다. 셋째, 언어와 음식을 통한 향토성 지향을 다룬 작품으로 ｢가재미․나귀｣와 ｢동해｣ 등이 있다. 방언과 음식에 대한 각별한 관심이 백석의 개인적인 취향일 수도 있으나, 토속적인 방언과 전통음식 을 문학의 영역으로 끌어와 형상화한 것은 민족 정체성의 위기라는 시대적 상황 에 대하여 그의 생각과 고민이 각별했음을 짐작하게 한다.
