Spiritual discernment lies at the heart of Christian Spirituality. Spiritual discernment has to do with distinguishing among the diverse stirrings of hearts, and how to respond to these stirrings, and to make a right decision. We will discuss and compare the teachings on discernment, both Ignatius Loyola and Jonathan Edwards, focused on the anthropological theme in regard to the inner movement of the hearts. Ignatius and Edwards regarded affections as an important element for discernment, not a feeling but a source of action, thus a central and integrating concept, but some differences are also noted: Ignatius focused on interior movements, whereas Edwards concentrated on the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the change of life. Although Ignatius and Edwards had a different interests and perspectives toward spiritual discernment because of their life and pastoral setting, their works will contribute to believers’ spiritual discernment living in a modern world. Nowadays, Korean Protestant church is in the middle of murky situation because of extreme enthusiasm, extreme charismatic movement focused on Holy Spirit and anti-intellectualism attitude. These results bring about its decline. Therefore, it is an urgent task to deal with the issue of affection or affectivity in the church members.

그리스도교 영성의 핵심 주제중 하나인 영적식별에 관한 가르침을 살펴보았다. 영적식별은 우리의 마음에 일어나는 움직임이 하나님께로 온 것인지 그렇지 않은지 그리고 이러한 움직임에 어떻게 반응 하는가를 따져보는 작업으로서, 기도와 삶을 통합시켜 삶에서 올바른 결정을 내리도록 도움을 주는 과정이다. 본 논문은 이냐시오와 에드워즈의 영적식별을 비교하는 연구를 논한 것으로 정서, 영적 위안, 속임수 등 내면의 움직임에 초점을 맞추었다. 이냐시오와 에드워즈는 정서를 단순한 감정이 아니라 행동의 근원으로 보았기에 내적 체험을 식별함에 있어 가장 중요한 요소로 보았다. 감성과 의지를 통합하는 개념으로 이해하는 공통점이 있지만 차이점 또한 발견할 수 있다. 이냐시오는 생각, 상상, 감정, 기울어짐, 열망, 느낌, 충동과 끌림 등으로 구성된 내적 움직임에 초점을 맞추었고, 에드워즈는 성령의 영원한 내주와 활동이 가져오는 삶의 변화에 집중하였다. 삶의 자리에 따라 다른 관심과 관점을 보이지만, 이냐시오와 에드워즈의 작품들은 오늘날의 신앙생활에 영적 식별의 지혜를 제공해주고 있다. 현재 한국교회는 극단적인 열광주의 혹은 극단적인 성령중심의 은사주의, 반지성주의 등으로 매우 영적으로 혼탁한 상황에 있다고 할 수 있다. 이는 곧 대 사회적 신뢰도 하락을 가져왔으며 더 나아가 한국교회 전체의 침체와 쇠퇴를 가져왔다. 따라서 한국교회 구성원들 안에서 일어나는 여러가지 복잡한 감정의 문제를 올바로 처리하는 지혜가 필요하다고 본다.
