Nowadays we feel that sexual ethics and morality in our society have changed a lot with the weakening of the church compared to the previous period. However, Analytical Psychologist C. G. Jung suggested that there is close relationship between sexuality and spirituality. Because the human sexuality contains not only the biological desire to combine with the opposite sex but also the desire to integrate the various pairs of opposite which compose human psyche. He proposed as an evidence that when one dreams having sex or incest it does not only mean to satisfy his/her sexual desire but to integrate various psychological factors especially the contrasexual figure(anima/animus) and to be born again through that sexual activity. Anima/animus is a transsexual element in human unconscious which relates human being to other sex and mediates the unconscious contents: while the anima acts as a feeling and relation function for men, the animus acts as an intellectual and discrimination function for women. If anima/animus is well developed, one can live well as a mature person with the developed personality. But if not, one can’t fit in well to his/her environment, especially in the relationship with the opposite sex, as one has many problems with the opposite sex. C. G. Jung thought that the mentality of human being has developed much from primitive times to the present day. He thought also religious symbol contributes much in that process, because it canalize the psychic energy which makes one to go to sexual instinct to spiritual objects. So human being was able to achieve the civilization unlike other animals. We can find that with Saint Francis of Assisi, Thomas Merton and many other christian mystics. For example the symbol, Lady Poverty was able to integrate the secular desire and holy desire for Saint Francis of Assisi. As it made him take her for his wife soothing his desire to live secular life but also made him persue poverty as it was not ordinary poverty but that of Jesus of Nazareth. Like such Lady Poverty was a good symbol to integrate the opposite desires which, otherwise will make many conflicts for him. Nowadays there are many sexual problems in our society with the weakening of the church. We see many contemporaries can't integrate animal instinct and the instinct toward spirituality. Also we see many criminals who haven't control their drives and aggression. It's huge problem in our society. So we should find the religious symbol which can integrate the opposite factors in human psyche.

현대 우리나라 사회의 우리나라의 성윤리와 도덕은 교회의 약화와 더불어서 그 전 시대에 비해서 상당히 많이 달라졌다. 그러나 스위스의 분석심리학자 C. G. 융은 성과 영성은 밀접한 관계에 있다고 주장하였다. 인간의 성욕에는 이성과 결합하려는 생물학적 욕망만 담겨 있는 것이 아니라 인간 정신을 구성하는 대극들을 통합하려는 욕망이 담겨 있다고 주장하였으며, 그 증거로 사람들이 성관계를 하는 꿈을 꾸는 것이나 근친상간의 욕망에도 정신에 있는 이성적인 요소를 통합하여 재탄생하려는 무의식의 욕망이 담겨 있다고 강조하였다. 아니마/아니무스는 사람들의 무의식에 있는 이성적 요소로서 성욕과 관계되는 정신요소는 아니마/아니무스인데, 아니마는 남성들에게 감정과 관계의 기능으로, 아니무스는 여성들에게 분별과 지적 기능으로 작용한다. 사람들에게 아니마/아니무스가 잘 발달되어 있을 경우, 아니마/아니무스는 사람들이 정신적으로 발달하게 하면서 삶에 제대로 적응하게 하지만, 그렇지 않을 경우 정신적으로 미숙하게 하여 삶에 제대로 적응하지 못하게 하며, 이성과의 관계에서 문제를 일으키게 한다. 사람들에게는 동물적 본능과 정신성을 향한 본능이 있고, 아니마/아니무스가 그것을 매개해주는데, 부정적인 아니마/아니무스가 부정적인 방식으로 매개해주기 때문이다. 인간의 정신은 원시시대부터 현재에 이르기까지 동물적 본능과 정신성을 향한 본능을 통합하면서 발달해왔으며, 그 과정에서 종교상징은 커다란 역할을 하였다. 종교상징은 본능의 유사형을 제공하여 정신에너지가 흐를 수 있도록 하면서 본능이 부정적인 방향으로 흐르지 않게 해왔기 때문이다. 그 결과 인간은 다른 동물들과 달리 문명을 이룰 수 있었는데, 우리는 그것을 아씨시의 성 프란치스코나 토마스 머튼 등 기독교 영성가들에게서 볼 수 있다. 아씨시의 성 프란치스코에게서 꼽추 여인과 가난 부인이라는 상징은 그의 영성발달에 커다란 기여를 했던 것이다. 그러나 현대 사회에 들어와서 종교가 약화되자 사람들에게 동물적 본능과 정신성을 향한 본능 사이에 균형이 깨어져서 여러 가지 문제들이 생기고 있다. 현대 사회에서는 성욕을 통제하지 못하여 문제에 봉착한 사람들이 많으며, 공격성을 통제하지 못하여 여러 가지 파괴적인 행위가 자행되고 있는 것이다. 그것들이 개인적인 범위를 넘어서 집단적인 범위에서 행해지면 파괴성은 상상을 초월할 정도로 드러나게 될 것이다. 그러므로 인류는 인간성을 이루고 있는 두 대극 사이를 통합할 수 있는 종교상징을 시급하게 모색하고, 인류가 다시 발달해갈 수 있도록 진력을 다해야 할 것이다.
