There are three different kinds of tragic heroes in Chinese mythology. The first is the one who saves the ordinary people from the disaster and receives the prize afterwards. This type of hero solves all the problems and chooses to perish. Yì and Gun are the examples. The second kind is the protesting character that never yields. This kind represents the hard fighting, which rebels but oftentimes fails to win the tribal battle. Chīyóu and Xingtian are the examples of those kinds. The last kind is optimistic figure who fights against the gigantic nature in spite of its incomplete power. This type usually fails or ends up being murdered cruelly, but transfers into the new form of life. Kuafu and Jingwei are the examples. Heroes become the object of worship because they are destined to have tragic ends. Their rebellious and indomitable attitudes proclaim the genuine and noble humanity, which takes the core of tragic beauty. For such reasons, we feel the sadness but grace from the heroic decease after the challenge and rebel.
