Osanhongdeung is a newspaper serialization story written in Chinese by Lee Bo-sang and was published in Maeil-shinbo over 170 episodes from June 20, 1941 to January 14, 1942. It is the last of the serial novel written by Lee Bo-sang. The story tried to recreate traditional values and system and appeared to have strategically targeted intellectuals familiar with Chinese literatures, which can be confirmed by a serial of novels he wrote. Korean intellectual in the modern period tried to reassess the value of historical people and wrote novels using their story. This was partly because of the demand of the age where Korea was under Japanese occupation. It is during this period and process Hong Kyongnae, a plunderer, established in the consciousness of people as a revolutionary for the mass. Lee Bo-sang, although he was writing a story about Hong Kyongnae’s rebellion, wrote a novel with a title that praised seven martyr people who suppressed the rebellion. It is diametrically opposed to the prevalent perception of Hong Kyongnae at the time. On the other hand, in that it did not follow the prevalent reasoning of the period, the novel acquires its uniqueness. It shows that there were diverse perspectives and approaches to history and literature among the intellectuals and the writers of the time.

<오산홍등>은 이보상이 1941년 6월 20일부터 1942년 1월 14일까지 약 170화 에 걸쳐 매일신보에 연재한 한문현토소설로 그의 연재물 중 마지막 작품이다. 소설을 통해 전통적 가치의 구현이라는 가치관을 반영함과 동시에 한문 식자층이라 는 독자를 노린 전략적 측면도 고려했음을 일련의 연재물을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 근대지식인들이 역사적 인물의 가치를 재평가해 소설로 바꾸는 작업이 이루어 진 것은 일제 강점이라는 특수한 상황과 맞물려 역사 속에서 앞길을 모색하려하는 시대적 요구도 한몫했다. 이 과정에서 서적(西賊)이자 흉적(凶賊)이었던 홍경래 는 민중의 혁명가로서 대중들의 인식 속에 자리 잡게 된다. 이보상은 홍경래난을 다룬 이야기임에도 불구하고 제목부터 홍경래를 토벌한 일곱 의사들을 기리는 의미를 담은 소설을 내놓았다. 당대 널리 퍼져있던 홍경래 에 대한 인식과 정반대로 배치된다. 오히려 주어진 시대의 논리를 무조건 따르고 있지 않다는 점에서 그 독특성을 획득하고 있는 것이다. 당대 지식인 작가들이 역 사와 문학에 접근하는 시도가 다양한 관점에서 이루어졌음을 보여주는 예시로서 도 의의를 가진다 하겠다.
