As a member of the policy research task force in the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation’s A Survey Study of Chosŭn Manuscripts Transferred Overseas in the Latter Chosŭn Period: British Ambassador to Korea, W. G. Aston’s Archives from August 23 to 30, 2014, the author was surprised to find a copy of the History of Koryŏ with the explanation: “A history of Korea, Weng Shu-k’un [In manuscript], 1814” in the Wade Collection of the Cambridge University Library East Asian Reading Room. The book contains the stamps indicating the name of the archive collection, Liu’s ownership, and Liu’s pen-name (Yan Ting), as well as stamps that indicate Weng’s courtesy name. Weng did not make a copy of the book, but had compared it to others in Liu’s collection in 1813; hence his stamp. Numbering 139 volumes, it is astounding that epigraph scholars went through and compared the book with others character by character. As Weng and Liu both researched Koryŏ Dynasty epigraphs, they conducted a close reading of the History of Koryŏ. Weng purchased a copy of the book via Japanese trade routes, and refused requests from other scholars to borrow the book for copying. As the copy he possessed was missing volumes 31 and 39, Weng requested copies of the missing volumes to Kim Chŏnghŭi and I Kwangmun in his personal correspondence. Although the book was mostly copied by Chinese on red rice paper, volume 31 was copied by a Korean on black rice paper, and volume 39 has no content. Thus, it seems that Weng’s requests went unanswered. The book is evidence that early 19thcenturyQingscholarswereexperiencinga History of the Koryŏ craze, and further research is needed on how it was used in studies of Qing epigraphs.

필자는 국외소재문화재재단의 정책과제 ｢구한말 해외 반출 조선시대 전적 현황 조사연구 : 주한 영국공사 애스톤 (W.G. Aston) 소장본｣ 연구팀의 일원으로 2014년 8월 23일부터 30일까지 영국 케임브리지대학 동아시아도서관[Cambridge University Library East Asian Reading Room]을 방문하여 애스톤 소장본을 비롯한 한국 고서를 조사하였다. 웨이드 컬렉션에서 “A history of Korea, by 翁樹崐, Weng Shu-k’un [In manuscript] 1814.”라는 설명의 高麗史를 찾아내고 깜짝 놀랐다. 이 책에는 ‘嘉蔭簃藏書印’․‘劉喜海印’․‘燕庭’이라는 도장과 ‘樹崑嘗觀’․‘星 原過眼’․‘星原嘗觀’이라는 도장이 찍혀 있다. 翁樹崐이 筆寫한 책이 아니라 劉 喜海 藏書를 翁樹崐이 1813년에 校勘한 책이다. 139권이나 되는 방대한 분량 을 모두 필사한 것도 놀랍지만, 금석문 학자가 한 글자 한 글자 교감한 것도 놀랍 다. 옹수곤이나 유희해 모두 이 시기에 고려시대 금석문을 연구하고 있었으므로, 『고려사』열전을 정독하고 있었다. 옹수곤은 그 이전에 일본 무역선을 통해서 고 려사를 구입했으며, 자신의 책을 빌려서 필사하려던 다른 학자들의 청을 거절하 였다. 옹수곤이 소장하고 있던 고려사에는 열전 권31, 권39 등이 빠져 있었으므로, 김정희나 이광문에게 편지를 보내어 빠진 부분을 필사해서 보내달라고 부탁 하였다. 이 책은 대부분 붉은 괘선지에 중국인이 필사했는데, 열전 권31은 검은 괘선지에 조선인이 필사해 보내주었으며, 열전 권39는 내용이 없다. 조선에서 부 탁을 받고도 보내오지 않은 듯하다. 이 책은 19세기초 청나라 학자들의 『고려사』열풍을 보여주는 증거이다. 이 책이 청나라 금석문 연구에 어떻게 이용되었는지, 추가로 연구해볼 필요가 있다.
