Teaching geography is not concerning what the best way of teaching geography is. Rather, we should have a point of focus for much of our thinking about the nature of geography. Teaching geography is reflected which the epistemological characteristics of geography should be and which the nature of geography should be, rather than not the methodological issue. Thus, we should face the nature of geography when we teach geography in schools. The first step of the paper making progress is to derive the problem identification. Teaching controversial issues in geography is eventually to concern what geography is. In result, we can have belief that teaching well in geography from drawing what controversial issues in geography. Based on the problem identification, new controversial issue in geography was suggested in the present paper over the previous area with controversial issues. Further, teaching geography through the new types of controversial issues is another name of a long journey to seek the identity of geography education.

지리를 가르친다는 것이 ‘지리를 가르치는 최선의 방법이 무엇인지’를 고민하는 것이 아니다. 오히려, ‘지리는 본래적으로 무엇인가’를 고민해야 한다. 지리를 가르친다는 것이 방법론의 문제가 아니라, 지리학의 어떤 인식론적 특징이 반영되어 있으며, 지리학의 어떤 본질적 특성이 반영되어 있는지에 대해 성찰해야 한다는 것이다. 그렇기에 지리를 가르친다는 것은 지리의 본질에 맞서지 않고는 해결될 수 없는 문제이다. 본 논문은 이같은 문제의식에서 시작한다. 지리교육에서 논쟁문제 교육을 한다는 것이 결국은 지리가 무엇인지를 고민하고, 그 결과로서 지리적 논쟁문제가 무엇인지를 도출해내는 것이 지리교육에서 논쟁문제를 잘 가르칠 수 있다는 신념을 갖게 한다. 이같은 문제의식을 토대로 지금까지 지리교육에서 다루었던 논쟁문제의 범주를 넘어 새로운 지리적 논쟁문제의 유형을 제안하였다. 나아가 이같은 새로운 지리적 논쟁문제의 유형을 통해 지리를 가르친다는 것이 결국은 지리교육의 정체성을 찾아가는 긴 여정의 또 다른 이름임을 보여주고자 하였다.
