An Analysis of Career Perceptions of the Elementary Mathematically Gifted Students Using the Career Experience Program

The purpose of this study was to develop a career experience program with the aim of improving career perception of elementary mathematically gifted students. In this aspect of the study, the research questions were what are the levels and characteristics of career perception of elementary mathematically gifted students? What are some characteristics of the career experience program? and does the career experience program have an influence on their career perception? The career Maturity Inventory(CMI) test developed by Crites(1978) was put to use for the test tool to examine the career maturity ‘attitude’. Additionally career maturity screening tool for the Jung Hee Lee(2009) was put to use for examining the‘ ability’of career maturity. Data was processed using the SPSS 18.0 program in order to verify the pre-andpost effectiveness of the program for t-test of dependent samples. To complement the limit of quantitative research, the analysis of students’self-assessment and program evaluation paper and teachers’observations were also presented. The results from this research are as follows. First, elementary mathematically gifted students’attitude and ability of career maturity is higher( .05 level of significance) than those of general students’. Second, depending on prerequisite findings, the career maturity level and career characteristics of elementary mathematically gifted students’, the program focused on the career exploration and experiential learning within a variety of career fields relating to mathematics using direct and indirect methods. Third, the results of applying a program shows higher improvements(.05 level of significance) than before. In addition, from the results of analysis of students’self-assessment and program evaluation paper and teachers’observations, it can be stated that this program had positive impact on improving career perception of elementary mathematically gifted students. The implication of this study is that it provided a career education program for elementary mathematically gifted students taking into account the needs of gifted students, parents and the level and characteristics of career perception. The program can surely be used effectively due to the program’s content being based on the curriculum of Seoul regional office of gifted education.

이 연구의 목적은 초등수학영재의 진로체험학습 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하여 수학영재들의 진로인식에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보는데 있다. 본 연구에서는 초등수학영재의 진로특성을 파악하고 수학영재, 학부모, 교사의 요구조사를 통해 교육 주체들의 요구를 수용하여 진로체험학습 프로그램을 개발하였으며, 이를 적용하고 난 후 진로성숙도 검사의 사전-사후 결과를 비교하고 연구대상의 반응평가를 분석하여 본 프로그램이 초등수학 영재의 진로인식향상에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 검증하였다. 분석 결과 초등수학영재의 진로성숙도는 일반학생에 비해 전 영역에서 높게 나타났으며, ‘직업 탐색’에 초점을 맞춘 본 프로그램이 초등수학영재의 진로성숙도와 진 로의식의 변화에도 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 영재교육 프로그램에서 다양한 진로의식 고양을 위한 프로그램의 개발을 제안하였다.
