Against the backdrop of urban regeneration of Shanghai in the early 2000s, this paper perceives “Shikumen vs Workers Village” debate as the competition between the two subjects that Shikumen and Workers’ Village respectively signify, tries to clarify the changes of Shikumen and Workers’ Village in the 20th century, and analyzes the realities of shimin(市民) and gongren(工人) in historical context of Shanghai. In addition, this paper reviews the meanings of limits of the debate in the phase of the early 2000s when, after finishing the reform of urban sector, Shanghai municipal government and communist party dreamed of being the hub of finance and trade in the 21st century.

이 논문은 2000년대 초 상하이에서 전개된 “석고문 vs 공인신촌” 논쟁을 물리적 주택양식 사이의 경합만이 아니라, 도시재생을 둘러싸고 각각의 주택양식이 상징하는 주체들 사이의 이해관계의 경합으로 인식하고, 우선 석고문과 공인신촌의 형성과 변화를 중화인민공화국 건국 이전, 사회주의 시기, 개혁기 등의 맥락 속에서 살펴보고, 다음으로 이들 주체들-시민과 공인-의 실체를 상하이 역사 속에서 분석한다. 마지막으로 1990년대 도시부문의 개혁을 일단락 짓고 푸동신구 개발을 통해서 21세기 금융무역중심지를 꿈꾸던 2000년대 초 상하이에서 이 논쟁의 의미와 한계를 검토한다.
