The purpose of this study was to make a case analysis of the Gumdarak Saturday cultural program provided by a local art gallery as part of the sociocultural and arts education project in an effort to seek ways of revitalizing culture and arts education through art galleries other than school. In our country, culture and arts education is neither well-founded philosophically nor systematic enough. Specifically, sustained and practical case studies should be implemented to dynamize culture and arts education geared toward elementary school students in school or local community. Therefore two different local art galleries that offered gallery-led culture and arts education were observed to explore what improvements should be made to remedy their problems. Gallery-led culture and arts education has obvious advantages in terms of content, space, materials and human resources thanks to the specific environments of art gallery. At the same time, however, there is definitely room for improvement in the way that gallery-led culture and arts education programs are conducted. If the way of running these programs is gradually improved to provide sustainable culture and arts education, that will make it possible for students to enrich their cultural experience and will produce good educational effects so that gallery-led culture and arts education could be reflected in school art education.

본 논문은 사회문화예술교육사업 중 지역 미술관에서 실시하고 있는 꿈다락 토요문화학교의 사례 분석을 통해 학교 밖에서 실시되고 있는 미술관 중심의 문화예술교육의 활성화 방안을 탐색해보았다. 우리나라의 문화예술교육은 철학적 기반이나 체계적인 교육과정 형식이 부족하기 때문에 특히 초등학생을 대상으로 하는 학교나 지역사회를 중심으로 하는 문화예술교육이 자리 잡기 위해서는 지속적인 현장 실천 사례 중심 연구를 수행해야 한다. 이에 미술관 중심의 문화예술교육을 실시하는 두 곳의 지역 미술관을 참관하여 문제점에 따른 개선방향을 탐색해 보았다. 미술관 중심의 문화예술교육은 내용적 측면, 공간적 측면, 재료적 측면, 인적 측면에서 미술관이라는 특수한 환경이 주는 장점은 분명히 존재한다. 그러나 미술관 중심의 문화예술교육프로그램을 운영하는 과정에서 개선해야 할 점에 대한 보완도 필수적이다. 이러한 미술관 중심의 문화예술교육프로그램을 운영하는 과정에서 개선해야 할 점을 조금씩 보완하여 지속 유지한다면 문화적 경험을 더욱 풍부하게 하고 더 나아가 학교 미술교육에 반영 가능한 교육적 효과와 가치를 얻을 수 있으리라 본다.
