Corrective education in correctional facilities aims to reform and rehabilitate prisoners. In particular, corrective education in combination with the humanities and character education may provide prisoners with a chance to introspect and reflect on themselves, changing their characters and values. This plays an important role in reinforcing corrections administration and establishing a social safety net. This study aims to seek the ways to develop and practice a Korean character education program and an integrated character education program and ultimately to systematize and reinforce corrective education. First of all, the correlation of corrective education with the humanities and the concept of character are discussed. The background of the emerging trends in character education is also investigated in the context of relevant theories, education, and society. This study suggests the concepts and virtues of character education and provides the necessary rationale for establishing a direction of corrective education by analyzing the actual con- ditions and circumstances of current character education. As an example of corrective education, this study took the humanities character education programs of Seoul Juvenile Training School and Yeoju Somang Correctional Institution. After the introduction of the humanities character education programs, the characters and values of the inmates of the juvenile training schools had been significantly changed and this program had been effective to assist them in adjusting to the society after their release. Although objective figure has yet to be determined in Somang Correctional Institution, we could confirm that its humanities character education program obviously has an important influence on the changes in human nature and values of prisoners. To systematize and reinforce corrective education, the character education in combination with the humanities and counseling is needed and, moreover, the Korean character education model needs to be developed to resolve the problems of Westernization in character education. And as its practical methods, this study suggested life-close adhesion character education, character education activating local communities and the middle zone, development of the customized character education program, and nurturing citizen character education expert etc.

교정현장에서 진행되는 교정교육은 교화를 통한 재소자의 원활한 사회복귀와 적응 을 목표로 한다. 특히 인문학 및 인성교육을 통한 교정교육은 인문학적 성찰과 반성 을 통해 재소자의 인성과 가치관의 변화를 초래함으로써 교정행정의 내실화와 사회 안전망을 구축하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 본 연구는 통합형 및 한국형 인성교육 프로그램 개발의 방향과 실천을 모색함으로써 교정교육을 체계화하고 내실화 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 먼저 교정교육과 인성개념과의 관련성을 논의하고 인성교육이 대두 하게 된 배경을 이론적, 교육적, 사회적 맥락에서 살펴보면서 인성교육의 개념과 덕 목을 제시하였다. 아울러 그동안 진행된 인성교육의 실태와 현실을 분석함으로써 교 정교육의 방향을 설정하는 데 필요한 근거를 제시하였다. 교정교육의 사례로 소망교도소, 서울구치소, 서울소년원의 인문 인성교육 프로그램 을 제시하면서 그 성과를 분석하였다. 인문학 인성 프로그램 도입으로 소년원생의 인 성과 가치관이 유의미하게 변화하였고 출원 후 사회적응에도 효과가 있었으며, 소망 교도소의 경우에도 재소자의 심성과 가치관이 변화하였고 재범률이 감소하였다. 그렇 지만 재소자의 특성과 정서에 부합한 맞춤형 밀착형 프로그램의 부재와 단기적 프로 그램으로 인한 효과의 지속성 단절 등의 문제도 있었다. 마지막으로 교정교육의 내실화와 체계화를 위해서는 인문・인성・상담 통합형 인 성교육이 필요하며 아울러 서구화된 인성교육의 문제를 극복할 수 있는 한국형 인성 교육 모델이 개발될 필요가 있음을 주장하였다. 통합형 인성교육은 교도소라는 시간 과 공간의 제약으로 외부와의 단절 및 시간의 무의미함의 상황에 있는 재소자의 인 성을 회복하는 효과적이며, 한국형 인성교육은 정의주의적 활동 위주의 실천 프로그 램 도입으로 재소자의 정서회복에 도움이 된다. 인성교육의 실천방법으로는 생활밀착 형 인성교육, 지역공동체 및 중간지대 활성화를 통한 인성교육, 맞춤형 인성교육 프 로그램 개발, 시민인성교육 전문가 육성 등을 제시하였다.
