This paper deals with questions concerning the regional characteristics and the production site of the Images of Pensive Bodhisattva created in the Wuding Period of the Eastern Wei Dynasty. The Image of Pensive Bodhisattva, made mainly with white marble, was very popular in the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties. The principal production center of the white marble was the whole area of Dingzhou, including Quyang, located in central Hebei Province. Thus white-marble-carved statues were almost collectively defined as “Dingzhou Style.” The Image of Pensive Bodhisattva was also known as a typical sculptural form of the Dingzhou area. However, because as many as 3,000 white-marble Buddhist sculptures were excavated in 2012 in Bei Wuzhuang Village of Linzhang County in Southern Hebei Province, the site of Ye City which was the capital city of the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi Dynasties, it has become necessary to reevaluate the styles and the production site of white-marble statues. In particular, the Image of Pensive Bodhisattva with the inscription “2nd year of Wuding Regime,” excavated from Bei Wuzhuang Village, is noteworthy. It is because this image was created before the one made in the 5th year of the Wuding Regime, which was excavated in the Xiude Temple Site of Quyang and is known to represent the “Dingzhou Style.” On both images the Double Tree motif appears for the first time; this motif was popular in the Northern Qi Period. The Double Tree motif features two trees placed on the left and right sides of the image; it is known as an attribute of the “Dingzhou Style.” However, the excavation of this image increased the possibility that the Images of Pensive Bodhisattva with the Double Tree motif originated in Ye City first and spread to the Dingzhou area. Although the two aforementioned images have the Double Tree motif in common, there is a difference in detail. In the images excavated in the Xiude Temple Site, a Curled-up Dragon motif moving up the trunk of two trees appears. This is a distinctive motif of the “Dingzhou Style.” By contrast, the Curled-up Dragon motif does not appear in the images excavated from Bei Wuzhuang Village. Not only in the previous image but in the images excavated from the whole area of Ye City, the Curled-up Dragon motif is not displayed. These differences in form resulted from the difference in production sites and reflect the historical fact that white-marble images were produced not only in the Dingzhou area but in several areas as well in the Eastern Wei Period. The study of locality obtained through the analysis of the two Pensive Bodhisattva Images made in different sites provides valid clues for inferring the production sites for the white-marble images scattered all over the world. In this paper, on the basis of the above analysis, we determined the production site of the Image of Pensive Bodhisattva “made in the 2nd year of Wuding Regime,” which is retained by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and whose excavation site is unknown, to be Ye City. Also, the fact that this image is of Five Statue, that the Flying Stupa motif appears on top of the front of the image, and that it does not emphasize in its inscription that it was made with jade, as those from the Dingzhou area typically do, establishes that this image was produced in Ye City.
