This study is an exploration of picture language and its characteristics and functions. The main aim of the study is to emphasize the significance of picture language and look for its roles in mentoring communication. This article defines picture language as an umbrella term includes simile, metaphor and symbol, and explains that it makes language expressions rich and it has formative and creative functions. This article asserts in detail that some issues of dysfunction in misuse of picture language which brings negative and disruptive effects. This article clarifies the differences between simile, metaphor and symbol, and delineates the effects and the characteristics of each type by showing concrete biblical examples. Furthermore, exploring relationships of picture language with brain, emotion and conversation, picture language plays an important role to help brain to collect, accumulate and activate information, and to bridge thinking and emotion so that human conversation can be rich and effective. Stressing the importance of picture language in mentoring communication, this article looks into the functions of the several dimensions of picture language. Th results show that picture language is an essential tool for mentor to praise mentee effectively, to heal mentee’s wound and to enforce mentee’s potentiality. The findings of the study suggest that the characteristics and the functions of picture language should be recognized and utilized well in mentoring communication.

본 연구는 그림 언어의 특성과 기능에 대한 연구로서 멘토링 커뮤니케이션 에서 그림 언어 사용의 중요성을 강조하고 그 역할을 밝히는데 주 목적이 있 다. 본 논문은 그림 언어라는 용어가 직유, 은유, 상징 등을 모두 포괄하는 용 어이며, 언어 표현을 풍성하게 하고 형성적이고 창조적인 기능이 있음을 설명 한다. 한편 그림 언어의 오용으로 인한 부정적이고 파괴적인 여러 역기능적 문 제들도 구체적으로 지적한다. 본 논문에서는 그림 언어의 유형으로 직유적 그 림 언어, 은유적 그림 언어 그리고 상징적 그림 언어를 중심으로 각 유형들이 어떻게 다르고 어떤 특성이 있는지 그리고 그 효과들로는 어떤 점들이 있는지 를 성경적 예를 제시하면서 구체적으로 밝히고 있다. 더 나아가 그림 언어가 언어활동과 관련 있는 뇌, 감정, 대화와 어떤 관계성이 있는지를 살피고 있다. 그 결과 그림 언어는 뇌가 정보를 수집하고 저장하고 활성화 시키는데 중요한 역할을 하며 사고와 정서를 연결하는 다리 역할을 하여 대화를 풍성하고 효과 적이게 한다는 것을 밝히고 있다. 본 논문은 마지막으로 멘토링 커뮤니케이션 에서 그림 언어의 중요성을 역설하면서 그림 언어의 다차원적 기능들을 구체 적으로 살피고 있다. 그 결과 그림 언어가 멘토링 과정에서 멘티를 효과적으로 칭찬하고, 멘티의 상처를 치유하며, 멘티의 잠재력을 강화시키는 중요한 언어 적 도구임을 예증하고 있다. 연구 결과 본 논문은 결론적으로 그림 언어의 여 러 특징과 기능들을 인지하고 멘토링 커뮤니케이션에서 적극 활용되어야 한다 고 제안한다.
