The purpose of this study is to examine if the effect of private education on the mathematics achievement growth is different across mathematics achievement levels by using Hierarchical Linear Growth Model with the data of Korea Educational Longitudinal Study. To estimate the net effect of private education, the following control variables were considered; intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, effective teaching, effort and perseverance, self-regulated learning strategy, self study hours, time management, peer relation, teacher-students' relation, time spent on reading, household income. The result shows that there is a different effect of private education on achievement growth across achievement levels. For example, there are positive effects of private education among higher and lower achievement groups. But for students of the middle level, personal study hours is more effective than private education for achievement growth. The most effective factor for achievement growth during middle school years is student's intrinsic motivation; therefore, the purpose of school mathematics education in middle school needs to focus on the value of mathematics and the enjoyment of mathematics. This study illuminates the necessity of various systematic school tutoring programs for students of low-income group to help them improve the achievement growth.

본 연구의 목적은 중학교 수학 학업 성취도 성장에 대한 사교육의 효과를 학생의 성취 수준 별로 살펴봄으로써 사교육의 효과가 학생의 성취 수준에 따라 다른지를 검토하고 추가적으로 학생의 성취도 성장을 위해 학교 수학 수업에서 강조되어야 할 점을 모색하는 것이다. 한국교 육개발원의 한국교육종단연구 자료를 사용하였으며 최종 분석 학교 수 113개교와 5017명의 학 생을 포함하고 있으며 2수준 다층 성장 모형을 적용하였다. 분석결과 사교육은 학생의 성취수 준에 따라서 다른 효과를 보여주고 있었다. 상위권과 하위권 학생들에게 사교육은 긍정적인 영 향을 미치고 있었지만, 중위권 학생에게는 사교육 보다는 개인공부시간이 더 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 특히 수학에 대한 내재적 동기는 사교육보다도 학생의 성취도 성장에 미치는 영향력 이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 수학 수업에서 가장 강조되어야 할 점은 수학에 대한 가치 와 수학에 대한 흥미를 학생들이 잃지 않도록 하는 것이다.
