The purpose of this study was to derive the challenges necessary for activation and sustainable growth of community enterprises by examining the emergence of community enterprises’ background and its role and the comparison with social enterprises. Community enterprises which aims to strengthen local communities and the government’s job creation have been upbringing under financial support of the government since 2010 and have shown a quantitative increase every year. But it can not be said that community enterprises are activated with only the numbers of them. The ultimate goal of community enterprises are activation of the local economy through job creation and achievement of community well-being through improving the quality of life of local residents. The result of this study suggests 4 challenges for community enterprise activation which are regionally differentiated model, forming partnerships, network activity and improving performance measurement and evaluation of community enterprises.

본 연구에서는 사회적 경제 영역으로서 마을기업의 등장배경과 역할 사회 적기업과의 비교 및 마을기업의 현황과 당면과제 등을 살펴봄으로써 마을기 업이 활성화되고 지속적으로 성장하기 위해 필요한 과제를 도출하고자 하였 다. 마을기업은 2010년부터 지역사회의 공동체성 강화와 일자리 창출에 기여 함을 목표로 정부의 재정적 지원 하에 육성되고 있어 매년 양적인 증가를 보 이고 있다. 그러나 이러한 양적이고 수적인 측면만으로 마을기업이 활성화되 었고, 마을기업이 추구하는 공익성과 수익성이 모두 달성되었다고 할 수는 없을 것이다. 마을기업이 추구하고자 하는 가치와 정부 정책의 최종 목표는 일자리 창출을 통한 지역경제의 활성화와 궁극적으로 지역 주민의 삶의 질 향상을 통한 커뮤니티 웰빙의 달성이다. 이를 위해서는 마을기업이 생존해야 하고 지속적으로 성장해야 하며 활성화 되어야 한다. 본 연구의 결과로 마을 기업 활성화를 위한 과제로 지역적 모델의 차별화, 파트너십의 형성, 네트워 크 활동, 마을기업 성과의 측정과 평가 개선의 네 가지 방안을 제안하였다.
