This study proposes a class model for teaching students to effectively write cover letters through the use of self-narratives. In this model, the teacher affords students sufficient time for self-exploration during a narrative writing session; the instructor also attempts to determine which topics students wish to explore in relation to their personalities and aspirations. Following this, the students compose narratives based on a personal experience that clearly demonstrates their unique strengths and characteristics. This exercise is followed by a session devoted to writing a cover letter, wherein students create a self-narrative based on the outcomes of the aforementioned self-exploration. This new self-narrative differs from the previous one, however, in that students must also take into account the expectations of the company for which they intend to apply. Today's employers attempt to determine the suitability of an applicant based on concrete experience rather than past work experience and education alone. Accordingly, the creation of writing classes specifically designed to teach students how to convey their unique experiences through a cover letter as a self-narrative is extremely important.

이 글은 서사문 쓰기와 자기소개서 쓰기 수업을 연계함으로써 자기서사가 잘 드러나는 자기소개서를 쓰도록 지도하는 하나의 수업 모형을 제안하는 데 목적이 있다. 자기소개서를 쓰기 전 먼저 서사문 쓰기 수업에서 자기 탐색의 과정을 통하여 자신이 어떤 사람인지를 탐색하고, 하고 싶은 일과 이루고 싶은 꿈에 대해서도 점검하게 한다. 그리고 자신의 강점과 특성을 보여줄 수 있는 일화를 선택하여 서사문을 쓰게 한다. 이어지는 자기소개서 쓰기 수업에서는 자기 탐색의 결과를 바탕으로 자기서사를 구축하는데, 이때의 자기서사는 반드시 지원하고자 하는 기업의 인재상과 상관성이 있는 것이어야 한다. 요즘의 독자(기업)는 자기소개서에서 지원자에 대한 단순한 정보를 얻으려 하기보다 지원자의 삶이 고스란히 녹아 있는 구체적인 경험을 통해 대상을 이해하려고 한다. 따라서 ‘자기서사로서의 자기소개서’를 통해 자신의 정보를 전달할 수 있도록 지도하는 글쓰기 수업이 필요하다.
