This paper discusses the necessity of teaching local languages to the rapidly increasing multicultural population of married immigrant women in Korea. Such women generally reside in rural areas, where the local residents communicate with a local language. These local languages form part of the social, historical, and cultural characteristics of the relevant region. Thus, if immigrant women wish to communicate with local residents and become accepted as members of the local community, they need to use and understand the local language. However, Korean language education for foreigners has thus far focused on teaching standard Korean, and these immigrant women can only learn the local languages by means of self-study. Such self-study is inefficient and problematic. These issues have been recognized by the academic field within Korean language education, and the necessity of teaching local languages within Korean language education programs has been mentioned. However, few attempts have been made, and suitable methods are seldom discussed. The study reported in this paper aimed to determine appropriate methods and media whereby Korean local languages can be taught to married immigrant woman with multicultural backgrounds. We conducted a survey about local language education among married immigrant woman in Gwang-ju. Analysis of the results of the survey suggests that drama with conversations in local languages may be used to produce educational content. Our findings may play a role in developing effective teaching methods and materials for local languages within Korean language education programs. We emphasize the importance of learning local languages for immigrant women to become multicultural citizens living alongside their local resident counterparts.

이글은 최근 급증하고 있는 여성결혼이민자들에게 지역어 교육이 필요하다는 점에 대해 논의하고 있다. 이들이 실제 거주하는 곳은 수도권 이외의 지역인 경우가 많으며 지역민들은 대부분 지역어로 의사소통한다. 지역어는 그 지역의 사회적․역사적․문화적 요소를 내포하고 있다. 이 때문에 이들이 거주하는 해당 지역의 지역민들과 제대로 소통하고 문제없이 정착하려면 지역어를 이해하고 사용하는 능력은 필수적이라 할 수 있겠다. 지금까지 학문 목적의 외국인을 대상으로 한 한국어 교육이 주류를 이루었기 때문에 표준어 중심의 교육이 이루어졌다. 때문에 지역에 살고 있는 여성결혼이민자들은 표준어를 배운 후 지역어는 스스로 습득할 수밖에 없었다. 이는 매우 비효율적이며 이들이 지역에 적응하여 살아가는 데에 장애가 된다. 이에 대한 문제를 인식하고 최근 지역어 교육에 대한 논의가 이루어지기는 했지만 그 수도 많지 않으며 콘텐츠를 활용하여 교육하는 방안에 대한 구체적 논의는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 이에 본고에서는 여성결혼이민자를 대상으로 의사소통적 측면에 집중하고 이들에게 영상 콘텐츠를 활용하여 지역어를 교육하는 방안에 대해 고민하고 있다. 이를 위해 광주광역시에 거주하는 여성결혼이민자를 대상으로 지역어 교육에 대한 설문을 진행한다. 이후 이를 근거로 드라마 속의 지역어 콘텐츠를 활용하는 방안, 교육용 콘텐츠를 제작하는 방안을 제시한다. 이러한 논의는 향후 여성결혼이민자들에게 지역어 교육이 필수적이라는 인식을 각인시키고 이들에게 좀 더 효과적으로 지역어를 교육시키는 방안에 대한 논의를 발전시키는 데에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있으리라고 기대한다.
