To investigate the novelistic form of our new age, we must now symbolize the meaning of its “irresponsible and liberal” literary experiments, and estimate how this experimentation is reconstructing the form of the contemporary novel. The trouble with the novel today originates in its generic destiny, which cannot choose but to pass through the communicative network of the market at risk of unfavorable conditions of alienation and isolation, unlike short stories, for which these conditions have not mattered. These conditions unavoidably ask their own to challenge this very alienation and isolation. In these situations, it seems natural that the Korean novels of our time would utilize the “story” to take up this challenge. That is why the “story” is the formal device in which the communicative scenarios of “talking” and “listening attentively” can act as a condition by which the imaginary construction of lost networks of communication and sympathy become possible. In this study, I investigate how the challenge against the problem of contemporary Korean Literature is concretely realized in novels today, focusing on the experimentation of the bricolage story that refunctionalizes and revitalizes the formal device of the “story.”

장편소설은 어떤 특정한 사회적 토대나 환경 혹은 특정 의제나 서사형식 등에 의해 적극적으로 규정되는 하나의 이념형이라기보다 ‘긴 분량’의 긴 호흡으로 무언가를 문학의 형식으로 제기하고 도모하는 상징적 형식을 뜻하는 최소개념으로 이해해야 한다. 이런 이해 속에서 우리는 오늘의 장편소설이 어떻게 기능하고 또 어떻게 존재하면서 스스로 재구성해가고 있는가를 살펴야 한다. 오늘 날 한국 장편소설이 처한 소외와 고립에 대한 응전의 한 방향으로 ‘이야기’라는 문학적 장치가 활용되고 있는 것은 자연스러워 보인다. ‘이야기’는 말하고 ‘귀 기울여 듣는’ 그러한 소통적 상황이 그 자체로 이미 그 자신의 내부에 각인되어 있는 형식적 장치이기 때문이다. 그리고 어떤 측면에서는 그것이 이미 잃어버린, 문학을 매개로 한 소통과 공감의 네트워크에 대한 상상적 구축을 가능하게 하는 조건으로 작용할 수도 있기 때문이다. 이 글에서는 최근의 장편소설들을 중심으로 ‘이야기’를 재활성화하는 문학적 실험의 세 가지 방향을 분석했다. 그들 소설들에서 나타나는 ‘이야기’의 재활성화는 단지 구연 형식으로 대표되는 전통적인 이야기 장치의 차용이라는 단순한 차원에 머물고 있는 것이 아니다. 이들 소설에서 이루어지고 있는 것은 첫째 ‘이야기’ 자체의 활성화와 그 ‘이야기’에 함축된 형식적․소통적 기능의 반성적 전유(󰡔황천기담󰡕)이고, 둘째 ‘이야기’의 메타소설적 구도로의 통합을 통한 타자의 고통에 대한 공생적(共生的) 연대의 감정의 환기(󰡔차남들의 세계사󰡕)이며, 셋째 ‘고통의 분유(分有)를 통한 ’경험을 나눌 줄 아는 능력‘의 재활성화 등이다. 우리는 이후 다양한 소설적 형식들에서 이야기의 재기능화가 어떤 다기한 방식으로 실험되고 있으며 그것이 어떤 문학적 효과를 만들어내는가를 보다 더 세심하게 살피고 한층 다양한 각도로 의미화할 필요가 있다. ‘문학 이후’에 가능한 장편소설의 미래에 대한 탐구가 그와 분리될 수 없는 까닭이다.
