Understanding the Internet of Things (IoT) through Analysis of News and Online Media

초록

영어

The Internet of Things (IoT) is attracting a lot of attention in both practice and research across a wide range of disciplines. While IoT is predicted to have widespread impact across a variety of sectors, the paucity of information regarding actual impact in real word applications of IoT has led some confusion regarding its state of development. Hence, our goal is to examine the discourse surrounding IoT, who is influencing its diffusion and direction, and in the process attempt to generate insight regarding its future development trajectory. We analyzed the characteristics of IoT-related discourse in terms of Who (influencer), Where (source), What (contents), and How (language tone) by conducting Twitter keyword analysis. We compared this analysis with analysis of discourse diffusion that included printed publications using LexisNexis to identify specific subject and firms. Our study results shed light on the current discourse regarding IoT to separate real impact from mere fashionable applications, and may provide insight regarding the future applications and development directions of IoT-related technologies and business models. Finally, we propose the analysis of online discourse diffusion through Twitter to be a useful method for understanding IT related fashion discourse diffusion.
