The purpose of this study is to collect and classify scribbles remaining on old novels for lending and figure out their meanings. Old novels for lending can be understood in many ways, but the most important thing of all is the lenders’ scribbles remaining on them. Scribbles found on novels for lending range from just few words written recklessly and abusive words about the rental store’s owner to their complaining about the books including criticism over them, lyrics of popular songs of the time, their opinions about the situations of the time, sense of criticism about popular culture of the time, and something erotic, etc. Those scribbles show the readers’ communication problems and their consciousness regarding the novels for lending. Therefore, these data suggest that we should not only deal with the novels as simple text but examine them in consideration of the people’s taste and cultural topography of the time as well. The very purpose of this study is to collect and classify scribbles found in novels for lending to understand what is implied in them in detail and furthermore explore the readers’ consciousness and analyze the true aspects of those rental stores and the reading culture and internal landscape of the people living in that age. This is a task to find out a new critical point in the history of literature and history of classical novels and also figure out the cultural topography of that age by exploring the readers’ taste and consciousness of literature and popular culture of the time. To examine it, this study is conducted with the following two areas. First, scribbles found on novels for lending are collected and classified. There are 90 kinds of novels for lending we can find as an actual object now, and scribbles found to be real in those novels are organized and classified. Next, this researcher analyzes the meanings of scribbles found in novels for lending and figures out the people’s taste and cultural topography based on that. Through that, this study is going to explore what significance novels for lending have in our history of literature and history of novels and what meaning they have in the cultural topography of Korea from the 19th up to early 20th century. Lastly, it is expected that this study will turn out to be crucial in both understanding lending or rental stores and figuring out how they enjoyed novels, their cultural taste, the readers’ consciousness, and the people’s preferences.

이 글은 세책본 소설에 남아 있는 낙서를 수집하고 이를 유형화하며 그 속에 담긴 의미를 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 세책본 소설의 특성은 여러 측면에서 규명할 수 있지만 가장 중요한 것은 세책본 소설에 남아 있는 대여자들의 낙서를 통해서이다. 세책본 소설의 낙서는 단순히 본문에 글자를 몇 자 적어놓은 것에서부터, 세책점 주인에 대한 욕설이나 세책본에 대한 비난과 같은 세책본에 대한 불만 사항도 있고, 당대의 유행가 가사, 시대적인 상황에 대한 소회와 같은 당대 대중문화에 대한 것들이나 비평의식도 남아있으며, 무엇보다 성(性)에 대한 다양한 낙서가 존재한다. 이러한 세책본의 낙서들은 세책본 소설 독자들의 실상을 고스란히 보여주는 것들이어서, 세책본 소설 연구에서 텍스트에만 집중할 것이 아니라 이러한 낙서를 함께 고려하여 세책본 독자의 특성과 취향, 당대 문화 지형을 살펴보아야 할 것을 시사해준다. 그러나 지금까지 세책본 소설에 남아있는 낙서의 실상을 구체적으로 다룬 연구는 드문 편이다. 이 글은 이러한 점에 착안하여 세책본 소설에 남아있는 다양한 낙서를 수집했고 낙서의 유형을 분류했으며, 그 속에 담긴 의미를 살펴보았다. 이 글은 이러한 목표를 위하여 크게 두 영역으로 나누어 글을 전개했다. 먼저 실물로 확인한 90종의 세책본 소설에서 1500여 건의 낙서를 추출하여 소장처 별로 간략하게 실태를 제시했고 유형 분류를 시도했다. 다음으로 이에 의거하여 대표적인 낙서의 예시를 제시하여 그 의미를 살폈다. 이 글은 세책본 소설에 존재하는 낙서의 실상을 밝히는데 초점이 있기 때문에 낙서가 지닌 공과(功過)나 그 의미 등은 자세히 다루지 못한 한계가 있다. 이 글에서 미진한 우리 문학사와 소설사에서 세책점, 세책본 소설이 지닌 의미, 19세기에서 20세기 초에 이르는 시기의 우리나라 문화 지형에서 세책점, 세책본 소설이 지닌 위상, 더 나아가 세책본 소설 독자들의 실상과 내면 의식, 당대 독서문화의 현실, 당대 사람들의 내면 풍경 등은 후속 연구에서 보완하기로 한다.
