Against this backdrop, this study aims to examine the trend of collecting and utilizing overseas information obtained by drifters during the period of Joseon Dynasty. Although the foreign information collected by drifters in Joseon Dynasty had constantly attracted attention of the government and intellectuals of the day, however the ways of informatization and utilization were not the same. The utilization of overseas information obtained by drifters was closely interrelated to the historical circumstances of the day so that it shows diverse aspects according to the different periods of time. Accordingly this study will take a look at drift information collectors and their methods of informatization in accordance with periodic division of Joseon Dynasty. Secondly this study will show how the incoming overseas information carried by drifters had been actually put into use. Finally, this study will explore the historical implications of the overseas information acquired through drifts and its impact on history in general.

본고는 조선시대에 표류를 통한 해외 정보의 수집과 활용의 추이를 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 조선시대에 표류를 통해 수집한 해외 정보는 가치는 줄곧 당대 정부와 지식인들의 주목을 받았지만, 시대의 변화에 따라 정보 수집의 주체와 해외정보의 활용 방식은 서로 다른 양상을 보인다. 즉, 표류를 통한 해외 정보의 활용은 당시의 시대적 배경과 밀접한 연관을 가지면서, 시대별로 다른 양상으로 전개되었다. 조선시대 표류를 통한 해외 정보의 수집과 활용의 추이를 검토하기 위해 본고는 다음과 같이 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 우선, 표류를 통해 유입된 정보의 특성과 가치에 대해 알아볼 것이다. 다음으로, 조선시대를 조선 전기와 후기로 나누어 시대별로 어떠한 주체가 표류를 통해 유입된 해외 정보에 관심을 가지고 구체적으로 어떻게 해외 정보를 수집했는지에 대해 살펴볼 것이다. 마지막으로, 표류를 통해 유입된 해외 정보가 어떠한 양상으로 수용되었으며, 표류를 통한 해외정보의 수집과 수용이 당대 사회에서는 어떠한 의미를 가지고 있었고, 후대에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 통해, 폐쇄적인 전근대시기에 표류라는 해상 사고가 조선 지식사회에 미친 영향을 시대별로 추적해볼 것이다.
