The purpose of this study is develop red carpet dress design which expresses Korean aesthetics. In this study, the concept and characteristics of Korean aesthetics were reviewed based on the precedent studies, and the aesthetic characteristics of Korean fashion design were drawn through the analysis of designers' artworks. Through the case analysis, flexibility, symbolism, continuity and compatibility were drawn as the aesthetic characteristics of Korean fashion design. Flexibility was expressed mainly based on the structural characteristics such as a change of silhouette along with the movement of wearer or human body through plane composition or full volume, beauty of space through the arrange of patterns, flow of irregular line and boundary deactivation. Symbolism was shown mainly through the utilization of traditional patterns including peony and lattice patterns, techniques such as natural dyeing and embroidery, materials such as five cardinal colors and the combination of colors. Continuity was expressed through the relationship between the flow of line and silhouette through the repetition of wrinkle or drape, the systematic nature of line and the overlapping of color, and the expression of spatiality shown through the cut-out technique. Compatibility was expressed with the harmonious expression of characteristics of eastern and western clothes in the configuration method of cloth or the utilization of material and the combination of other aesthetic characteristics. Before developing the design, Princess Deokhye who was a person symbolizing the loss and distortion of the Korean traditional culture was selected as muse, and in order to apply the drawn aesthetic characteristics, the design plan was prepared and a total of 8 dresses were produced.

본 연구는 한국적 정서가 담긴 패션디자인의 개발을 통하여 차별화된 문화콘텐츠로서 한국적 이미지의 글로벌화를 모색할 수 있는 미적 특성과 가치를 발견하기 위한 것이다. 선행연구를 분석하여 한국 전통복식의 미적 특성을 도출하였고 1990년대 이후 세계무대를 대상으로 패션쇼를 진행했던 진태옥, 이영희, 설윤형과 이상봉의 작품사례를 통해 한국인의 정서와 복식의 미적 특성을 표현하는 조형적 특성을 확인하였다. 한국 전통복식의 미적 특성으로는 유동성, 상징성, 연속성, 융합성이 도출되었고 디자이너의 작품을 통해 나타나는 표현적 특성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유동성은 평면적 구성이나 풍성한 볼륨감과 인체의 움직임에 따른 실루엣의 변화, 불규칙한 곡선의 흐름이나 경계의 해체와 같은 구조적 특징으로 나타났다. 둘째, 상징성은 모란, 격자문 등의 전통문양과 천연염색이나 자수 등의 기법, 오방색의 활용을 통해 나타났다. 셋째, 연속성은 주름이나 드레이프를 통한 선의 흐름과 실루엣의 관계, 비치는 소재를 통해 표현되는 선과 색의 중첩, 컷 아웃을 통해 나타나는 몸과 복식 간의 공간을 통해 파악할 수 있었다. 넷째, 융합성은 옷의 구성방식과 소재나 문양의 활용에서 동서양의 요소가 조화롭게 표현된 것과 유동성, 상징성, 연속성의 다른 미적 특성들의 조화를 통해 표현되고 있다. 레드카펫 드레스 디자인 개발이라는 연구의 특성상 연구의 배경과 목적에 부합하는 인물로서 덕혜옹주를 뮤즈로 삼았고, 작품분석을 통해 도출된 조형적 특징과 미적 특성을 활용하여 8점의 레드카펫 드레스 작품을 제작하였다.
