This study seeks to find ways to accelerate the realization of a peaceful society in which different faiths can maintain their own religious identity while accepting and respecting other faiths. To accomplishthis, the study reviews methods presented from the perspectives of Johan Galtung’s peace studies, as well asmethods discussed concerning religious pluralism. Though both views share the same standpoint concerning the problems hindering the realization of peace in a multi-religious society, they each propose different solutions to it. This study focuses on how a multi-religious society can be achieved by reviewing both the problems and solutions proposed in both theories and by determining which methods can provide what is necessary. The result of this study first of all requires an approach that can eradicate cultural violence based on the dichotomous thinking of religion. In order to achieve peace in a multi-religious society, it is essential to throw away the dichotomous thought that one’s religion is absolutely right while others are imperfect and inferior; instead, all religions should be able to mutually respect and understand one another as having a horizontal, equal relationship. Secondly, the study proposes engaging in conversations that go beyond the surface issues,focusing instead on conductingheart-to-heart communicative discourse from a standpoint transcending one’s own religion. Since the ultimate purpose of religion does not revolve around seeking merely its own growth and development, but rather inbringing about human salvation and a peaceful society, peace in a multi-religious society is attainable if conversations are held from a standpoint that is transcendent of one’s individual religious preferences, and when one practices a life of sacrifice and self-denial.

연구는 다양한 종교가 자기 종교의 정체성을 잃지 않으면서도 타종교를 인정하고 존중하여 우리 사회가 평화로운 공동체를 구현해 나가는데 촉매제 역할을 할 수 있는 방안을 모색하기 위해 요한 갈퉁이 평화학의 관점에서 제시한 방안과 종교다원주의에서 논의하고 있는 방안을 검토하고자 하였다. 두 관점은 다종교사회의 평화실현을 방해하는 문제에 대해서는 공통적인 시각을 가지고 있으나 그 대안은 각기 다르게 제시되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 두 이론에서 제시하고 있는 문제와 대안에 대해 검토해보고 이를 바탕으로 다종교사회 실현을 위한 과제를 정리해 보았다. 그 결과 첫째, 종교의 이분법적 사고에 기초한 문화적 폭력을 근절하는 자세가 요청된다. 다종교사회의 평화실현을 위해서는 자기 종교는 완전하고 절대적으로 옳으며 타종교는 불완전하고 열등하다는 이분법적 자세를 버리고 상호 존중하는 자세를 가져야 하며 모든 종교를 수평적인 관계로 이해하는 자세를 가져야 한다. 둘째, 종교의 표층적 차원을 넘어 심층적 차원에서 종교의 자기초월적 대화가 요청되는 것으로 나타났다. 종교의 궁극적 목적은 각 종교의 성장과 발전이 아니라 평화의 실현과 구원에 있기에 자기초월적 자세로 대화하며 희생과 비움을 실천할 때 다종교사회의 평화는 실현될 수 있을 것이다.
