Kim Sam-Bul(1920~?) is a highly notable figure who is often mentioned whenever we try to examine the fruition of pansori and pansori novels in the area of Korean classical literature following the emancipation. As he was “a scholar who defected to North Korea,” we have not been able to assign any meaning to his life or his research results. Therefore, this study is aimed at restoring his reputation, and also examining his research results both in South Korea right after the emancipation, as well as in North Korea following his defection, to determinetheir significance. This study investigates his life by chronicling the period between his birth to his graduation from Yonhee Occupational Training College, his transfer to Seoul National University,this avidly conducted academic activities, his deeds during the Korean War,his activities prior to his defection to North Korea, and the period following his defection to North Korea. Moreover, this researcher categorizes his academic achievements into practicing research on literature based on the suggestions made by the literary scholars in the Left, suggesting an annotation edition for classical literature, as well as new directions for modern translation, restoring Sin Jae-Hyo,creatingpansori novels, organizing heterogeneous editions, as well as restoring and vesting interest into the hidden works of women and ordinary people and then providing meaning to them.

김삼불(金三不, 1920 ~ ?)은 해방 직후에 한국 고전문학 분야의 판소리, 판소리계 소설에 대한 성과를 점검할 때마다 항상 언급되는 중요한 인물이다. 그러나 “월북학자”라는 이유로 지금까지 생애는 물론 그의 연구 업적에 대한 의미 부여도 이루어지지 못했다. 따라서 이 글의 목표는 그의 생애를 복원하고, 해방 직후 남한과 월북한 뒤의 북한에서의 연구 업적을 검토하고 그의 위상을 찾는 것이다. 김삼불의 연희전문학교의 학적부와 동기생들의 증언, 󰡔매일신보󰡕를 비롯한 신문, 잡지에 실린 기사, 시인 정지용, 역사학자 김성칠, 국문학자 이병기, 이명선 등의 회고록, 그가 남긴 저작물에 의거하여, 생애를 출생에서부터 연희전문학교 졸업시기, 서울대학교의 편입과 본격적인 학문 활동 시기, 한국전쟁 때의 행적과 월북 직전의 활동, 월북 이후의 활동기로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그리고 그가 거둔 학문적 업적을 좌익 계열 문학연구자들이 제시한 문학 연구 방향의 실천, 고전문학의 주석본, 현대역본의 새로운 방향 제시, 신재효의 복원, 판소리계 소설의 형성 및 이본 정리, 여성과 민중의 묻혀진 자료 복원과 관심으로 나누어 살펴본 뒤, 그의 학문적 업적의 의미를 부여해 보았다.
