To South Koreans, North Korea has two identities: a foe and a sibling. This paradoxical (not necessarily paradoxical; more contradictory or conflict) duality manifests itself in conflicts among South Koreans concerning how to maintain peace and eventually reunify the divided nation. Conservative elements espouse the rapid collapse of the North Korean regime whereas progressive parties remain pessimistic, while the South Korean government’s political ambiguity stirs the conflict. Recently, there has been an attempt to connect multiculturalism and the reunification issue in order to find a clue to resolving the problem of reunification. This paper aims to explore the relationship between multiculturalism and the education of reunification in our society and its implications. To this end, multiculturalism and the issue with regard to Korean unification are (nationalism, postnationalism, open nationalism) examined. Several concepts of reunification are reviewed and reconceptualized from the perspective of multicuturalism. Finally, several suggestions for Christian reunification education are suggested.

지금까지 진행되어온 통일교육과 관련된 여러 현안들 가운데는 정부 주도의 통일 정책 방향과 보수와 진보의 견해차에 따른 우리 사회 내부의 첨예한 갈등이 일차적으로 거론된다. 공식적으로는 신뢰를 기반으로 한 남북관계의 신뢰 형성을 강조하면서도 체제 우위적 관점을 고수함으로서 남한에서의 통일교육 내용은 크게 변하지 않고 있다. 보수와 진보의 갈등 역시 통일교육의 방향을 설정하는데 장애가 되고 있다. 최근 들어서는 통일교육과 관련해서 다문화주의와 통일교육을 연계하려는 시도가 제기되고 있다. 현재 남한 사회에서 진행되는 급속한 다문화 추세를 감안해서 다문화 사회에 진입한 한국의 상황을 고려하면서 기존의 통일교육에 다원적이고 복합적인 정체성과 다문화 사회의 공존 모형까지 포함시킬 필요가 있다는 것이다. 이 논문은 통일교육에 있어서 다문화주의를 고려해야 할 이유는 무엇이고, 통일교육을 위한 주요 개념들이 다문화주의와 연계할 경우에 어떻게 재개념화 될 수 있는지, 그리고 기독교교육학적 관점에서 볼 때 다문화주의가 통일교육에 대해서 갖는 함의들이 무엇인지 차례로 검토한다.
