Function means a performance of the acts and operation in certain areas. In order to effectively implement a particular function for users, design is required. Good design requires a lot of consideration in terms of the different angles, and complementary process for the weaknesses contained in a specific design. After all, a product is always closely related to human life, and to meet the nature of the product functions as an integral part of the product satisfies essentiality of a product. The reason that the product is created is to provide the specific function that they want to provide to the user. And this functionality may be associated with intrinsic value of this design. Good design can be defined to meet a variety of factors derived from the multi-dimensional aspects. That is how good design and functionality of the design can be linked, and how functional elements are related to aesthetics, emotion, sustainability, and usability of the design through a variety of proven cases of architecture, space, products, and transportation design. In addition, it is the most important elements for designer to be able to accurately recognize the nature of certain problems and effectively solve those problems with their ability on observation and creativity. After all, good design is to effectively reflect the essentiality by grasping its genuine essence and which eventually can be described as functionality.

기능이란 일정한 분야에서 수행하는 역할과 작용을 의미하며, 사용자로 하여금 특정한 기능을 효과적으로 구현하기 위해서 디자인은 존재한다. 좋은 디자인을 생산하기 위해서는 다양한 각도와 관점에서의 많은 고민이 필요하며, 여러 안목에서 특정 디자인이 가지고 있는 약점들을 보완해가는 과정이 요구된다. 결국 제품이라는 것은 인간의 삶에 항상 밀접하게 관련이 있고, 기능이라는 제품의 필수적인 요소로써 제품의 본질을 충족시킨다. 제품이 탄생하게 된 이유는 제품으로 하여금 사용자에게 그들이 원하는 특정한 기능을 제공하기 위함이고, 이 기능성을 충족시키는 것이 디자인이 추구하는 본질적인 가치와 연계될 수 있다. 좋은 디자인은 이렇게 다양하게 도출된 요소들을 다각적인 관점에서 만족시킬 수 있는 디자인이라고 정의할 수 있다. 디자인의 기능성이 어떻게 좋은 디자인과 연계될 수 있는지, 그리고 기능성이 디자인의 심미성, 감성, 지속가능성, 사용성을 포함한 다양한 관점에서 어떠한 관계가 있는지 건축, 공간, 제품, 운송디자인의 다양한 사례를 통해서 증명한다. 아울러 디자이너로써 특정한 문제의 본질을 정확하게 파악하여 관찰력과 창의력을 가지고 효율적으로 문제 해결할 수 있는 능력이 디자이너만이 가질 수 있는 중요한 역할이 될 것이다. 결국 좋은 디자인이란 본질의 파악을 통해서 그 본질, 즉 기능성을 최대한 효과적으로 발현하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 좋은 디자인이란 특정 디자인에 의문을 갖는 다양한 각도의 질문으로부터 성공적으로 답변을 제공해줄 수 있는 디자인이 되어야 할 것이다.
