「富嶽百景」と「黄金風景」と通じて、《苦悩》を再解釈してみた。富士山に対する〈私〉の気持ちが相当に揺れ動いている作品であったが、《苦悩》を自慢している<私>が富士山で何人かの女性たちに出会う。その出会いから富士山に対し、《光》のような《月見草》が咲いていると、周囲のことを明るく解釈し、感じ、変わっていることが分かった。太宰の中期が「素朴」「自然」「簡潔な」ことを指向していたことはよく周知の上で、希望を失っていた前期とは違い、自分と向き合い、正直になり、希望を取り戻せたかのように、《苦痛》が《光》に変わっている作品であった。
