This paper aims to explore the debate over political correctness in relation to the development of multiculturalism and find a way we should take in multicultural education. Multicultural movement of the New Left in USA became active in 1960s providing the multicultural perspective on race, class and gender. However, in 1970s, its enthusiasm was weakened confronted with the backlash of the majority groups. In this situation, the progressives accepted the new ideas of French philosophers such as Derrida, Foucault, Lacan and Bourdieu and strengthened the theoretical basis of multicultural movement using the term ‘multiculturalism’. In the early 1980s, under the flag of multiculturalism, each separate minority group joined together and revolted against the conservatives. Intimidated with this, conservatives began to criticize the progressives saying that the arguments of progressives were correct only in the political sense. Since 1987, both groups have debated about the 4 controversial issues_the canon, the speech code, the exclusion of western civilization courses from university curriculum and multicultural education in public schools. Understanding these issues will help us to find a way we should take in multicultural education.

본 논문의 목적은 ‘정치적 올바름(political correctness, PC)’논쟁을 다문화주의의 전개과정과 관 련하여 고찰함으로써 다문화교육의 방향을 재고하는 데 있다. 1960년대 구미 신좌파들의 다문화운동은 인종·계급·젠더 등에 대해 ‘다문화적 시각’을 제공하면서 활발하게 전개되었지만, 1970년대에는 주류 집단의 강한 반발로 그 열정이 약화되었다. 이러한 가운데 진보주의자들은 후기구조주의 철학을 수용하여 다문화운동의 이론적 바탕을 강화하면서, ‘다문화주의’라는 용어를 사용하기 시작했다. 1980년대 초에 이 르면 여러 분리된 소수자집단들은 다문화주의라는 이름하에 함께 연합하여 보수진영에 대항하기에 이르 렀다. 진보진영의 결속은 보수주의자들에게 커다란 위협이 되었다. 이에 보수주의자들은 다문화주의의 주 장들이 ‘정치적 올바름’에 지나지 않는다는 논리를 개발하여 진보주의자들의 논리를 정면으로 비판하기 시 작하였다. 1987년 이후 두 진영은 4가지 이슈(정전[正典], 스피치코드, 대학 교육과정에서 서구문명 강좌 폐지, 공립학교에서 다문화교육)를 두고 치열한 논쟁을 하였다. 필자는 이들 이슈에 대한 사회사적 이해 가 다문화교육의 방향 재고에 많은 시사점을 줄 것으로 본다.
