This essay looks into the dreams in W. B. Yeats’s poetry. As a Last Romantic Yeats considers dreams invaluable; in particular, dreams enable Yeats to see things invisible. In other words, to dream is the way to understand the truth in the world; it is not enough to understand it by way of scientific knowledge alone. In his poems, dreams have neither a fixed nor single meaning: it depends on their contexts. His dreams can be classified into illusion, vision, imagination, revelation, and in this essay I would like to focus on illusions and visions in Yeats’s poetry. Key words: W. B. 낭만주의 시대의 마지막 시인으로 자처한 예이츠는 꿈을 진리로 간주하 며 꿈을 유달리 귀하게 여겨왔다. 그는 꿈만이 이성적 인간에게는 전혀 보이지 않는 내면을 투시하게 해준다고 믿었던 시인이다. 세상을 진정으로 이해하는 길을 열어주는 것은 얄팍한 과학지식이 아니라 꿈이라는 것이다. 논자는 예이츠 시에 나타난 꿈을 네 가지 속성 즉 환상, 비전, 상상력, 계시로 구분하여 꿈의 특성을 밝혀본다. 특히 이번 논문에서는 꿈의 다른 형태인 환상과 비전에 초점을 맞추어 분석할 것이다. 결론적으 로 예이츠 시에 나타난 꿈은 단일한 의미가 아니라 맥락에 따라 다양한 의미를 드러낸 다는 점이다.
