Under the situation that economic structure has been shifting into knowledge oriented economy and the importance of intellectual assets have been growing, this study is to investigate the value-relevance of Patent. The foundlings with 9,138 firm-year observations from listed companies are as followings. First, Quantitative indexes of patent, such as acquisition of patent and the number of patent, have been not examined additional association with firm values. Second, the value-relevance of absolute performance indexes that are derived indexes from patent information, such as the productivity of patent and the degree of patent accumulation, have been insignificant, while that of the relative performance indexes, such as the degree of patent concentration has been significantly associated with firm values. These results indicate that qualitative factors of patent have been positively more correlated with firm value than quantitative factors and alternative accounting procedures are needed to improve the usefulness of accounting information in high-tech industry. Futhermore, future study will be expected including various Indexes which is unlisted in this study. For example, our future work will include reference index, which is one of qualitative indexes that are populary used in academics and prationers, to investigate the value-relevance of the qualitative indexes driven from patent.

본 연구는 지식기반 경제의 진입으로 무형자산의 중요성이 커지고 있는 상황에서, 특허권의 가치 관련성에 대하여 검토하고자 한다. 2000년부터 2012년까지 비금융업에 속하는 유가증권상장기업과 코스닥 등록기업 9,138개의 기업-연도별 자료를 대상으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 특허권의 증 분적 가치관련성을 분석한 결과에서는 특허권의 정량적 지표(특허취득 여부 및 특허 취득 건수)는 추가적인 가치관련성을 제공하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 특허권의 2차적인 파생정보로서 절대적 성과지표와 상대적 성과지표의 가치관련성을 검증한 결과에서 절대적 성과지표(특허생산성 및 기술 집적도)의 증분적 가치관련성은 통계적으로 유의하지 못하였지만, 상대적 성과지표(기술집중도)의 증분적 가치관련성은 유의적임을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 최근 특허권 취득과 관련된 양적 정보는 더 이상 기업가치와 유의적인 관련성 을 가지지 못하며, 특허권 자산의 질적 요인이 보다 유의적인 가치관련성을 가지고 있음을 확인하 였다는데 의의가 있다.
