Despite the social disorganization research tradition in the western society that collective efficacy plays a role as a mediator between community structural factors and fear of crime, less attention has been given in our society to empirically pinpoint the factors of collective efficacy as well as to assess the impact of collective efficacy on quality of life. This research used several research models such as community context model, community control model, disorder model, victimization model, and vulnerability model to empirically test collective efficacy and fear of crime simultaneously. Based on the social disorganization research tradition, collective efficacy was considered as a mediator between major factors and fear of crime. Results showed that collective efficacy acted well as the mediator between major structural factors and fear of crime. As well, variables based on community control model and vulnerability model had expected effects on both collective efficacy and fear of crime, thus showing the possibility of these models to be applied to collective efficacy. On the other hand, variables based on the disorder model and the victimization model showed unexpectedly opposite directions in the effects on collective efficacy. Surprisingly, the direct role of community context model was minimal, but some community level variables had important effects on both fear of crime and collective efficacy through cross-level interactions with individual level variables. The results clearly suggested that collective efficacy was important as a mediator between major structural factors and fear. The results also showed the applicability of some fear based research models to the empirical studies of collective efficacy.

집합효율성이 지역사회 해체의 매개요인으로 범죄 및 범죄에 대한 두려움에 영향을 준다는 사회해체이론에 근거한 서구에서의 연구흐름에도 불구하고, 우리 사회에서 집합효율성에 영향을 주는 요인과 삶의 질에 미치는 집합효율성의 효 과를 실증적으로 검증한 사례는 많지 않다. 본 연구는 집합효율성과 범죄에 대 한 두려움을 검증하기 위한 공통의 연구모형으로 지역사회거시환경모형, 범죄피 해모형, 사회통제모형, 무질서모형, 취약성모형을 제시하고 수도권 읍면동별 센서 스자료와 시민들의 설문조사자료를 통합하여 분석하였다. 사회해체이론과 선행연 구에 근거하여 집합효율성에 대한 인식을 연구모형별 영향요인과 범죄에 대한 두려움의 매개요인으로 설정하여 분석을 진행하였다. 분석결과는 기대했던 바와 같이 집합효율성에 대한 인식이 높을수록 시민들 의 범죄에 대한 두려움이 낮아짐으로써 집합효율성이 범죄두려움을 설명하는 매 개요인으로 역할을 한다는 것을 보여주었다. 사회통제모형 및 취약성모형은 집합 효율성에 대한 인식과 범죄두려움 모두에 기대했던 결과를 보였다. 무질서모형과 범죄피해모형은 범죄두려움에는 기대했던 결과를 보인반면에 집합효율성에는 기 대와 반대되는 결과를 보였다. 지역사회거시환경모형에서는 인구밀도를 제외한 어떠한 변인도 직접적인 차원의 유의미한 영향력을 보이지 않았으나 일부 변인 이 개인수준 변인과의 교차상호작용을 통해 집합효율성 및 범죄에 대한 두려움 에 유의미한 영향을 주었다. 이러한 분석결과는 범죄두려움을 설명하는 매개요인 으로서 집합효율성의 활용 가능성을 보여줌은 물론 범죄에 대한 두려움을 설명 하는 일부 연구모형이 집합효율성 연구에도 의미 있게 적용될 수 있다는 점을 시사하고 있다.
