The liberal arts aim for universal knowledge and human values. Therefore liberal arts become a cornerstone of knowledge-based society in educating ability of classification and integration, value judgement and capability of communication. In particular, most junior college emphasizing on the importance of the job have ignored the necessity of liberal arts. College students have been trying to acquire only technology for the job without educating liberal arts developing ability to think and exploring self. It is a result of ignoring values of liberal arts. In this situation, this study on debating class model for the college students will be worth. The classroom of debating was connected with reading, writing, hearing and speaking. Therefore, the college students’ ability of communication has improved by debating. Students participating in the debate understood that a place for debate is not only speaking their claims but also hearing a person’s opinion. Also they realize that the debate is communication of high standard raising a point by presenting the reasons. The classroom of debating was a great opportunity for college students. Because of debating, they realized that communication is important and experienced improving ability to think.

대학은 전문적인 지식뿐만 아니라 보편적인 지식체계를 습득하는 교육기 관으로, 교과과정 역시‘ 교양과 전공’의 상호작용을 토대로 교과과정의 체계를 지속해왔다. 그 중 교양은 보편적인 지식의 구조를 탐구하여, 인간 의 존엄성을 모색하는 과목이다. 취업 기술에 편중된 전문대학의 경우 그 간 교양교육의 효용성을 간과해왔다. 전문대학생은 사고력, 지적 체계와 자아 탐구의 소양을 지니지 못한 채 직업교육을 통해 단순한 기술습득에 만 집중해왔다. 그러나 교양이 개별 지식을 분류·통합하는 능력과 의사 결정, 가치 판단의 주체적인 힘을 길러준다는 점에서, 지식기반 사회의 중 요한 자질을 연구하는 학문이다. 전문대생의 의사소통 능력을 증진시키기 위해 토론을 중심으로 하는 교 양국어 수업을 한 학기 동안 진행했다. 읽기와 쓰기에 낯선 학생들을 위해 토론 수업에만 집중하기보다‘ 읽기-쓰기-말하기-듣기’ 전 영역을 학습하 는 가운데, 자기표현의 능력을 습득시키고자 했다. 하나의 읽기 자료를 읽 고, 쓰고 말하고 듣는 가운데 사유 지평의 확장과 의사소통의 체계를 습득 하는 것이 수업의 궁극적인 목표였다. 학생들은 토론이 단순히 자기표현의 과정이 아니라, 정보를 습득하고 자료 에 의미를 부여하여 남을 설득하는 고차원적인 의사표현임을 인지하기 시 작했다. 취업위주의 교육 체계에서 벗어나 인문학적 소양을 높이는데 교 육 목적을 둔 토론 수업은 학생들의 사고 지평 확대의 초석을 마련하였다.
