The students in General English courses at college usually tend not to have a strong motivation for learning. In order to maximize the learning effect, it is needed to keep and maintain their learning motivation. To achieve this, this study aims to apply Keller's ARCS motivational model, which is presented to improve the motivational aspects of learning in a systematic way, to the General English lessons where the movie 'Kuzco' is used as the teaching material, and to evaluate the effects on their motivation and achievement. The subject for this study is 60 students who took the General English as a required course attending one of the universities in Kyunggi-do during the first semester of 2014. As a means of measurement, open and closed questionnaires and the results of level tests which are taken before and at the end of the semester are used. The analysis on the results indicates that the teaching-learning method applying ARCS motivation model for General English is effective in improving learning motivation of General English, in all elements of learning motivation such as attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction, and in improving academic achievement of the participants of the study.

대학에서의 교양영어수업은 전공 수업에 비해 학습에 대한 참여 동기가 강한 상태가 아니기 때문에 그 학습효과를 극대화하기 위하여 학습자들의 학습동기를 유발하고 유지하는 것이 필요하다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 경기 도에 소재한 한 4년제 대학에서 교양영어를 수강하는 60명을 대상으로 이 들의 동기수준을 분석하고, Keller의 ARCS 동기유발 모형을 적용한 교수- 학습방법을 설계하여 수업을 실시한 후, 설문지와 학기 전, 후에 치러지는 레벨테스트의 결과 비교를 통해 학습자들의 학습 동기와 성취에 미친 영향을 알아보았다. 그 결과 ARCS 동기유발 모형을 적용한 대학 교양영어 교수-학습방법은 본 연구 참여자들의 주의(Attention), 관련성(Relevance), 자신감(Confidence), 만족감(Satisfaction)의 모든 동기요소의 향상에 효과 가 있었음을 보여주었다. 또한 학업성취도 면에서도 대응표본 T검정을 한 결과 학기 전·후의 시험결과의 차이가 통계적으로 유의미한 것으로 나와 (t (51)= -17.414, p =.000) 효과가 있었음을 보여주었다.
