Kim Woo-Jin eagerly reveals fantasies of “poetry” through his novels and plays. This paper analyzes the meaning of these fantasies through aspects of poetry that appear in Kim Woo-Jin's prose. The result is, first, that the poet reveals his “personality” through poetry. Of course, Kim Woo-Jin thinks differently of poetry from what we think today. The reason is that the concept of “personality” or “nature” is philosophical, religious, and cosmic. Secondly, poetry provides a moment of creative bliss, which is the best aspect of the art. However, he does not disparage other literary genres. He only emphasizes that literary genres should also orient poetic status. Third, Kim Woo-Jin's novels and plays also orient poetic status; therefore, all his literary works are ultimately oriented in “poetry.” In short, Kim Woo-Jin had fantasies about poetry through out his literary life. Kim Woo-Jin has so far been considered a pioneer in theater. In conclusion, as stated in this paper, selections of literary works of Kim Woo-Jin are expected to be meaningful texts for an understanding of the concept of modern poetry.

김우진은 소설과 희곡 작품을 통해 시에 대해 강한 환상을 드러내고 있다. 이 글은 김우진의 산문에 나타난 시 인식 양상을 살펴봄으로써 이러한 환상이 어떠한 의미를 지니는 것인지을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 얻은 결론은 크게 세 가지이다. 첫째, 시인은 시를 통해 자신의 ‘개성’을 드러낼 수 있다는 점이다. 물론 김우진이 생각한 시가 오늘날 우리가 생각하는 것과 똑같은 것이라고 보기는 어렵다. 그가 말하는 ‘개성’ 혹은 ‘본성’은 ‘자연’, ‘우주’, ‘진리’ 등과 관련된다는 점에서 다분히 철학적, 종교적, 우주적인 성격을 지니는 것이기 때문이다. 둘째, 시는 순간의 창조적 행복을 제공하며, 이는 예술의 최고 경지라는 점이다. 그렇다고 김우진이 다른 문학 장르를 폄하한 것은 아니다. 다만 다른 문학 장르 역시 시적인 경지를 지향해야 한다는 점을 강조하고 있을 뿐이다. 셋째, 시 이외의 문학 장르도 시적인 경지를 추구해야 한다는 생각 때문에 그의 소설과 희곡 역시 시의 형식을 닮아가려 한다는 점이다. 이러한 관점에서 보면 김우진이 창작한 모든 문학 작품은 궁극적으로 ‘시’를 지향하는 것이었다. 요컨대 김우진은 문학 활동을 하던 전 기간에 걸쳐 ‘시’에 대한 환상을 지니고 살았다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 지금까지 주로 희곡 분야의 선구자로 평가받아 왔던 김우진에 대해 새롭게 접근할 수 있는 가능성을 제시했다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.
