This paper started from the critical perspective that existing studies in the line of “traditionalism” or “mental history” only by making the behaviors to like old things that major writing staff including Lee Byeonggi, Jeong Ji-yong, and Lee Tae-jun shared a medium. However, these studies have been mistaken in understanding the traditionalism of Munjang as a tendency to bury one’s head in the sand or in devaluing its status to that of a magazine of classics or traditional poems. This kind of limited evaluation of Munjang may be the result of an approach to the history of literature that is over-focused on a traditional, dichotomous viewpoint of content versus form and the right and right. This paper has tried to analyze Munjang from a more contemporary empirical viewpoint, with a focus on understanding the literary trends of writers in the era of Japanese colonization of Korea and also on looking at prose writing in the magazine, which has been largely ignored in favor of the verse. The characteristics of Munjang and its meaning in korea literary history that this paper sets out are as follows. First, Munjang shows the effort to accept without prejudice modernist literature with Guinhoi as the center, as well as race-oriented literary works including traoditional theory, and also Kapf Literti’s work. This diversity of material implies that the attempt to understand Munjang merely in terms of “traditionalism” or “modernism” is simply a convenient literary-historical fiction of later scholars. Second, the traditional theory that is the basis of the poetic tendencies and mental history of Munjang should be distinguished from the traditional pursuit of the retro style or the style of the orthodox party of Munhyup. The traditionalism of Lee Tae-jun, Jeong Ji-yong, Lee Byeong-gi, Jo Ji-hun, and Kim Yong-jun does not just mean the preservation of old things. They also search the “modern meanings” of tradition and tried to supplement modernity and seek the West through this search. Third, the proses of Munjang shows the lack of prospects of wondering novelists including Lee Tae-jun. Chunhyangjeon’s world, which can be emphasized by verse and the false rumors who focus on stories, are just included in the world of classical prose that Lee Tae-jun found with expectations about Munjang like the name. Lee Tae-jun failed in suggesting the content of the “modern meanings” that he had viewed up to that point as consisting of “expression” and “individuality” whether someone made him do it or he did it on his own.

본고는 <문장>에 대한 기존의 연구가 주로 이병기, 정지용, 이태준 등 주요 필진들이 공유한 상고취미를 매개로 ‘전통주의’나 정신사적 맥락 속에서만 이루어졌다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 이러한 연구들은 <문장>지의 전통주의를 일제 말 현실 회피의 성향으로 읽어내거나 <문장>지의 위상을 고전 발굴이나 ‘전통시’ 위주의 잡지로 평가절하하는 누를 낳고 말았다. 이같은 <문장>지에 대한 일면적 평가는 문학사를 내용과 형식, 좌익과 우익 등의 이분법적 시선으로 접근하려 한 결과라 할 수 있다. 본고는 보다 당대적이고 실증적인 방법으로 <문장>의 실체와 ‘전통주의’에 접근하려 노력하였다. 또한 그동안 소홀히 다루어져 왔던 <문장>지의 산문을 운문과 함께 총체적으로 정리함으로써 일제 말기 문인들의 현실인식과 문학적 지향점을 고찰하였다. 본고에서 밝힌 <문장>의 특성과 문학사적 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, <문장>은 전통론에 기반한 민족 지향의 문학작품은 물론 구인회를 중심으로 한 모더니즘 성향의 문학, 나아가 카프계 문학작품들을 편견없이 수용하려는 노력을 보여준다. 이같은 개방적 특성과 다양성은 <문장>을 단순히 ‘전통주의’나 ‘모더니즘’의 일면적 성과로 파악해선 안된다는 사실을 말해준다. <문장>에 대한 실증적이고 당대적인 평가가 이루어져야 후대 문학사가들의 필요나 편의에 의해 ‘만들어진 문학사’를 넘어설 수 있다. <문장>의 실증적이고 당대적 의미는 유파에 관계없는 지면의 개방성과 문학사상의 다양성 추구에 있었으며 ‘민족’을 우위에 둔 전통주의와 근대사상의 조화로 규정할 수 있다. 둘째, <문장>이 지닌 시적 성향의 바탕이며 정신사적 특징이라 할 수 있는 ‘전통론’은 1930년대 복고풍의 전통추구나 문협 정통파의 전통론과는 구별된다. <문장>의 이태준, 정지용, 이병기, 조지훈, 김용준 등의 전통주의는 단순히 옛 것에 대한 보존을 의미하지 않았다. 그들은 전통의 ‘현대적 의미’를 탐색하고 이를 통해 서구 추수의 근대성을 보완하고자 했다. 셋째, <문장>의 산문들은 일제하 이태준을 비롯한 소설가들의 방황과 ‘전망 없음’을 보여준다. 이태준이 이름 그대로 ‘문장’에 대한 기대로 찾아들어간 고전 산문의 세계에는 운문으로만 맛이 나는 󰡔춘향전󰡕의 세계와 이야기에만 치우친 가담항설만이 놓여 있을 뿐이었다. 자의든 타의든 <문장>과 이태준은 지금껏 자신이 견지해온 ‘표현’과 ‘개성’을 펼쳐놓을 만한 ‘현대적 의미’의 내용을 제시하는데 실패한다.
