This paper analyze political character in Choi In-Ho’s novels, a topic. Few papershave commented on political character. Because Choi is looking critically at a controlled or “standardized” society in his novels, it seems that he may be assuming a critical attitude toward political power also. However, critical reading shows that his novels are instead swayed by the ruling ideology of the state, specifically of President Park Chung-hee’s regime(1961~1979) in South Korea. Taking a look at the internalization-process of the ruling ideology in Choi’s novels, we can first recognize how deeply he is frightened at the notion of political power of Park’s regime. Second, always we can recognize how deeply Choi burns with anger at Choi’s enslavement to poverty. So, he paradoxically was assuming that Standing by political authority by Park’s power means that people overcome enslavement. Above all, the fact that Choi’s conservative ideology(anti-communism and anti-liberalism) is represented by hiding or twisting the form of his works is also a peculiar feature of his writing. Of course, there is an important aspect of why he has to hide his conservative ideology. However, I think seeing the forms of his works “as they are,” without interference from ideology, is more important than anything else. Even if it is a difficult task requiring careful reading. One reason why Choi hides or twists his conservative ideology in his works may be the difficult political situation. As the liberals come out increasingly openly against the dictatorship, he has no choice but to look out for exposing his conservative ideology(anticommunism and anti-liberalism).

본 논문은 최인호 소설에 나타난 정치성에 대해 분석하고 있다. 최인호 소설에서 정치성을 논하는 논문들은 많지 않다. 그 이유는 그의 소설들이 통제되거나 규격화된 사회를 비판적으로 바라보고 있으므로 당연히 권력에 비판적일 거라는 선입견이 작용했기 때문이다. 그렇지만 연구결과 최인호의 소설은 보수적인 우익성향의 이데올로기에 지배되어 있다는 것이 확인되었다. 최인호는 박정희정권의 지배이데올로기를 거의 신봉하다시피하고 있는 것이다. 그가 소설 속에서 그린 권력의 내면화과정을 살펴보면 첫째는 권력으로부터 겪은 참담한 공포와 그로부터 받아들인 권력의 전능함에 대한 경험이 자리잡고 있다. 본의 아니게 연루된 사건에서 권력의 취조과정은 무섭고 집요하고 끝내는 주체를 지배하고 만다. 둘째는 오랜 가난으로 ‘줄곧 부림을 당하고 있었다’라는 노예상태에 대한 분노와 그 노예상태로부터 벗어날 수 있는 힘으로서 권력을 상정하고 있다는 것이다. 그렇지만 그보다도 그러한 그의 보수적 이념이 작품 속에 은폐나 왜곡의 형식으로 드러난다는 사실은 그의 소설세계의 어찌 보면 매우 중요한 특징이랄 수도 있다. 그가 왜 그것을 작품 속에서 그렇게 은폐해야 했을까하는 물음에 답하는 것도 중요하지만 어쨌든 그의 소설이 이렇게 직설적이지 않다는 사실 자체를 이해하는 것도 매우 중요하다고 생각된다. 왜냐 하면 그 사실은 우리로 하여금 그의 작품을 이해하는데 매우 조심스럽게 접근해야 할 것을 요구하기 때문이다. 그가 자신의 정치적 이념을 작품 속에서 은폐, 혹은 왜곡시킨 이유는 무엇보다도 당시의 시국이 매우 경화되어 있었기 때문으로 풀이된다. 독재와 맞서려는 진보진영의 흐름이 너무 강했기에 자신의 이념을 드러내는 데에 매우 조심스러울 수밖에 없지 않았나 판단되는 것이다.
